Workers unearthed a trove of Roman coins weighing 600 kg.

Workers found 19 jars containing thousands of unused bronze and silver coins dating from the 3rd and 4th centuries, the Seville Archaeological Museum said.

It is believed that these coins were newly minted at the time they were buried and may have been kept to pay soldiers or civil servants.

The discovery in the town of Tomares on the southern outskirts of Seville is unique in Spain and of invaluable value, museum director Ana Navarro said.

The museum has been in contact with partners in Britain, France and Italy, and the discovery appears to be one of the most important of its time, she told reporters.

The clay pots, 10 of which are believed to be intact, were found more than a meter underground.

Navarro said the coins studied so far all feature images of the emperors Constantine and Maximian, along with various illustrations on the reverse.

Maximian was born around 250 AD and held several high military positions before serving under Emperor Aurelian. He ascended the throne in 285 AD and took the title of Emperor Augustus.

Each emperor had his own court, army, palace and laws, so these coins were issued nationwide. The Spanish Ministry of Culture said the museum does not have any similar coins in its collection.
