What did director Park Chan Wook say when 'Determined to Break Up' was not nominated for an Oscar?

Park Chan-wook admits his career might have turned out a little differently if The Decision to Break Up hadn't been snubbed at the Oscars. Speaking to The New Yorker, the director said, "It would be hypocritical to deny that awards are the most important factor in a filmmaker's advancement in Hollywood. If someone gets an award, it means they have more power, more creative freedom on their next project. It also means they're more likely to get a bigger budget, depending on the award they get."

However, he also said that even if he were awarded an Oscar, he probably wouldn't attend. Park Chan-wook's co-writer of The Handmaiden - Chung Seo Kyung added that Park "really doesn't like the glitz of attending awards ceremonies anyway".

It's a fact that the Korean Film Council has never nominated any of Park Chan-wook's films for the country's Best Foreign Language Film Oscars since 2022. And there's no denying that The Last Words is the director's first film that has a strong chance of winning in this category.

He also told IndieWire that The Decision to Break Up definitely has less "dark" elements than his previous films, so he also hopes it will reach a wider audience.

Park Chan Wook said: "I always thought that I was making love stories. But I realized that no one had ever said that about my films. They even laughed when I made such comments and considered it a joke. That made me think about why. Reviews of my works always mention violence and sexuality. It's true that it's a bit much. This time, I wanted to show something different."

He recently directed the first three episodes of the A24/HBO series The Sympathizer, which stars Robert Downey Jr., the latest Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor. According to multiple sources, director Park Chan-wook himself suggested to the executive producers that Downey play four characters who are all white, male, and stereotypically American.
