Is this the end for YouTube channels creating AI videos?

YouTube will be changing its policy in the near future, targeting low-quality content generated by AI. However, it's still uncertain what types of videos will be included.

Recently, social media has been flooded with posts about the world's largest streaming platform disabling monetization for AI-generated videos. If this happens, many content creators will be severely impacted in terms of revenue.

In fact, YouTube is preparing to update its policies to tighten the monetization capabilities of certain creators. Content that "lacks authenticity," including mass-produced and repetitive videos easily created with AI technology, will be affected.

On July 15th, the platform will update its YouTube Partner Program (YPP) monetization policy, adding more detailed guidelines on what types of content qualify for monetization and what do not. YouTube maintains that creators are always required to upload "original" content. This update will help them better understand what constitutes "unauthentic" content in the current context.

Some YouTube creators are concerned that this update will limit the ability to monetize certain types of videos, such as reaction videos. However, in a post, Rene Ritchie, YouTube's Head of Editorial & Creator Links, asserted that this is not true.

Ritchie stated that this change is merely a "minor update" to the long-standing YPP policies. The platform is designed to better identify mass-produced content, which has historically been ineligible for monetization because users still view it as spam.

According to the new guidelines, content using AI voiceovers without any personal commentary or storytelling may not be eligible for monetization. Similarly, reaction or summary videos lacking original perspective, creativity, and anything that follows a repetitive formula, especially on Shorts, will be affected.

With the rise of AI technology, YouTube is flooded with trashy, low-quality videos. It's not uncommon to find videos using AI voiceovers over images, clips, or recycled content, thanks to AI tools that convert text into video.

Many videos are fake news stories. In another case, a viral YouTube series about real-life crimes was found to be entirely AI-generated, according to 404Media .

The low-quality AI-generated videos have somewhat damaged the platform's reputation, and they want to reduce them. However, YouTube also tried to downplay the upcoming policy changes, calling them just "a minor update" to combat spam content in an email statement.

The censorship process will never be perfect, and it remains unclear which videos will be subject to YouTube's monetization shutdown. According to Gizmodo , both Google and YouTube want to leverage AI as an optimal tool within their platforms. Therefore, users will need to wait until July 15th to find out if their content will have its monetization disabled.
