According to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, Ruoming Pang, described as a prominent engineer and manager in charge of Apple's platform modeling team, is leaving to join Meta. This marks another setback for the iPhone maker in its efforts to keep up with the AI race.
According to Gurman, to get Pang, Meta offered a compensation package worth tens of millions of dollars per year. However, the latest source of Bloomberg revealed that the real compensation that the former Apple engineer received was even greater than that.
Specifically, Pang's salary package will be more than $200 million at Meta and depends on the accompanying conditions. Although the number is very high, this compensation package is said to be in line with other talent acquisition deals in Meta's "super intelligence" strategy.
The package is broken down into smaller elements, including a base salary and a signing bonus, which is said to be high to account for the employee giving up a large amount of equity in the startup they previously worked for.
According to Bloomberg , stock will be the largest part of the compensation package, with payments based on specific goals such as helping Meta stock grow by a certain percentage over a year. The stock that engineers receive will also vest over a longer period than the typical four-year schedule that Meta awards employees.
Facebook's parent company's massive talent recruitment strategy is shaking up Silicon Valley with a series of drastic moves.
After his vice president of generative AI was demoted, founder Mark Zuckerberg invested more than $14 billion in startup Scale AI and recruited 28-year-old founder Alexandr Wang. Meta also approached several startups, including Perplexity AI, about potential deals.
Some have received formal offers, worth up to $100 million . At least four people have accepted to join Meta.
