Nominate Phong Nha Ke Bang as a World Biosphere Reserve

On October 2, news from the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park Management Board said that the unit has just worked with the Department of Nature Conservation and Biodiversity ( Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment ) and related units to build a nomination dossier to recognize Phong Nha - Ke Bang as a world biosphere reserve.

To carry out the dossier, the authorities will survey and establish the Phong Nha - Ke Bang World Biosphere Reserve with an area of ​​484,326 hectares and a population of 133,642 people.

In which, the core zone of the biosphere reserve is taken according to the boundary of the core zone of the National Park and the heritage area of ​​Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park; these areas are located in 2 districts, 7 communes/towns, with an area of ​​123,326 hectares.

The buffer zone is taken from the boundary of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park's buffer zone, located in 3 districts, 13 communes/towns, with an area of ​​220,000 hectares; the transition zone is located in 6 districts/towns, 18 communes/towns, with an area of ​​141,000 hectares.

It is known that to be nominated as a World Biosphere Reserve, 7 criteria must be met: The nominated area has diverse representation of ecosystems; the nominated area has high biodiversity conservation value; the biosphere reserve can be developed in a sustainable direction; the biosphere reserve has a suitable area; the area has enough suitable areas...

Currently, there are 738 biosphere reserves in 134 countries in the world; including 22 recognized transboundary world biosphere reserves. In Vietnam, there are currently 11 world biosphere reserves.

If Phong Nha - Ke Bang World Biosphere Reserve is recognized, it will contribute to the conservation of diverse landscapes, ecosystems, species and genetic resources; promote sustainable economic , cultural and human development.

Previously, in 2003, Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park was recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage according to geological and geomorphological criteria, and in 2015 it was recognized for ecological and biodiversity criteria.
