U.S. businesses urged to contribute to supporting a 'strong, independent, self-reliant and prosperous' Vietnam

Attending the "Vietnam - US Business Forum on Cooperation in Technology and Innovation", Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked US businesses to contribute to realizing the US's support for a "strong, independent, self-reliant and prosperous" Vietnam.

On the occasion of attending the High-Level Week of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly and bilateral activities in the United States, on the morning of September 18 (local time), in San Francisco, California, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the "Vietnam - US Business Forum on Cooperation in the Field of Technology and Innovation" organized by the Ministry of Planning and Investment in coordination with the Consulate General of Vietnam in San Francisco and the US - ASEAN Business Council.

The Forum was attended by members of the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation and many leaders of Vietnamese and US businesses.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh recalled the development of Vietnam-US relations, emphasizing that during his state visit to Vietnam, US President Joe Biden and General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong announced the upgrading of the two countries' relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. This is a great effort by the two countries' governments and peoples, including businesses of the two countries.

Regarding the fundamental factors for businesses to feel secure in investing and developing, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that Vietnam is building a socialist democracy, a socialist rule-of-law state, a socialist-oriented market economy; throughout that process, people are taken as the center, the goal, the subject, the driving force and the resource of development; not sacrificing fairness, social security, the environment for mere economic growth.

Along with that, Vietnam implements an independent, self-reliant, diversified, multilateral foreign policy, is a good friend, a reliable partner and a responsible member of the international community; builds an independent, self-reliant economy associated with proactive, active, deep, substantive and effective international integration; the 4 no's defense policy "no participation in military alliances; no alliance with one country to fight another; no allowing foreign countries to set up military bases or use territory to fight against other countries; no use of force or threat of use of force in international relations".

The Prime Minister said that after nearly four decades of innovation, openness and integration, Vietnam has achieved many remarkable achievements. The size of the economy reached 409 billion USD; per capita income increased from 160 USD to over 4,100 USD. Vietnam has become one of the 20 economies with the largest international trade in the world and among the 40 economies with the largest scale in the world.

In 2022, facing rapid, complex, unpredictable and hard-to-forecast developments in the world and regional economy, with many difficulties and challenges, Vietnam has "turned danger into opportunity" and achieved many important results: GDP growth in 2022 reached 8.02%, the highest in the past 10 years; import-export turnover reached over 732 billion USD, up 9.5%, trade surplus over 11 billion USD; realized FDI capital reached about 22.4 billion USD, the highest in the past 5 years. In addition, Vietnam's investment environment continues to be positively evaluated by the international community and investors in terms of growth prospects and business environment.

Currently, Vietnam is implementing three strategic breakthroughs in institutional improvement, infrastructure development and human resource training, including in the fields of digital technology, energy transition, green transition, circular economy, sharing economy, etc.

Vietnam determines that "the success of investors is its success", hoping that with a good foundation and favorable momentum of cooperation and development, businesses of the two countries will continue to promote cooperation and investment.

With the viewpoint that "resources originate from thinking and awareness; motivation originates from innovation and creativity; strength originates from people and businesses", the Prime Minister hopes that US businesses will continue to invest in Vietnam, helping Vietnam participate in the global supply chain, especially in the fields of science, technology, and innovation to win together, for mutual benefit, in the spirit of "harmonious benefits, shared risks".

Responding to the Prime Minister's comments, representatives of businesses from the two countries had open, frank and substantive exchanges on investment cooperation opportunities, focusing on the fields of technology and innovation; wishing to participate in Vietnam's digital transformation process.

Businesses believe that the upgrading of Vietnam-US relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, in which Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and President Joe Biden agreed to make technology, innovation and investment truly become new pillars in the bilateral relationship, is a strong and positive turning point for businesses from both countries to cooperate and invest.

Enterprises suggested that the two governments continue to promote connections between people and businesses in production and technology application; develop technology, innovation, semiconductor technology, remote sensing, artificial intelligence, big data; especially train high-quality human resources to meet the needs of businesses of the two countries.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh welcomed the interest of enterprises in the Vietnamese market; said that with the viewpoint that "strength comes from people and enterprises", enterprises of the two countries have practical actions, concretizing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries; bringing benefits to the nation and people of each country; in accordance with the development situation of the two countries, the trend of the times and the legitimate aspirations of the people of the two countries and in accordance with the business strategies of enterprises of the two countries.

The Prime Minister asked US businesses to realize the US's support for a "strong, independent, self-reliant and prosperous" Vietnam. In particular, businesses need to focus on the fields of trade, services; science and technology, innovation, especially digital technology and energy conversion, circular economy, and sharing economy.

With the viewpoint of "the healthy helping the weak; the young helping the old; the rich helping the low-income people" and with the viewpoint of "putting the past behind, looking towards the future, healing the wounds of war", but not overnight, the Prime Minister hopes that American people and businesses will come to Vietnam to witness Vietnam's innovation.

The Prime Minister affirmed that the Vietnamese Government is ready to open its doors to all businesses to invest in a legal, stable and effective manner for the strength and prosperity of each country and the well-being and happiness of its people. "This is the best way to heal wounds, put the past behind us and look towards the future," the Prime Minister emphasized.

At the Forum, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and delegates witnessed the ceremony of handing over cooperation agreements: State Capital Investment Corporation (SCIC), Vietnam Pharmaceutical Corporation (Vinapharm) and representatives of Biomed Group signed a cooperation agreement, joint venture to establish a company to produce and conduct clinical trials of Biomed's biopharmaceutical products and invest in building an R&D Center in Vietnam; Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) and Qualcomm Technologies Company (QTI) signed a cooperation agreement to transfer the right to use QTI's technology and equipment to VNPT in the field of digital technology; Mobifone Telecommunications Corporation and Jupiter Networks Group signed a cooperation agreement on cooperation in the field of building data centers and cloud computing services; Rikkeisoft Vietnam Company and RKTech USA Company signed a MOU on investment in establishing RKTech America Company in Dallas, Texas for design, development of computer software, mobile applications and consulting services.
