Increase the degree of differentiation.

The 2024 Literature exam sample consists of two parts: Reading Comprehension (3 points) and Essay Writing (7 points). According to the Ministry of Education and Training, this will be the last year the Literature exam will be entirely essay-based. From 2025 onwards, according to the published sample, the Literature exam will include both multiple-choice and essay questions.

Commenting on the sample test, teacher Trinh Thu Tuyet from the Hocmai Education System stated that the structure and types of questions remain unchanged. Specifically, in the reading comprehension section, the text is a poem, and the four questions are not evenly divided across four difficulty levels. Instead, the number of recognition-based questions has increased, reducing the overall difficulty, which is advantageous for candidates. There is also a question allowing candidates to express their opinion. The question level is easier than in previous years.

For the essay section, there are two questions with the same structure as before, familiar and not challenging for the last generation of students studying and taking the exam under the 2006 curriculum. "The exam doesn't have any trick questions, so students just need to study seriously," Ms. Tuyet shared.

Sharing this view, Ms. Hoang Thi Tu Anh (Literature teacher at Vietnam-Poland High School, Hanoi ) believes that the exam format is familiar, and students have already been practicing with this type of exam, so they were not surprised when the sample exam was released. The exam is appropriate for students, with the social commentary question worth 2.0 points having a practical topic related to real life. The literary analysis section includes a supplementary question that clearly distinguishes the candidates' abilities and is open-ended, in line with the 2018 general education curriculum. Ms. Tu Anh suggested that the Ministry of Education and Training publish the answer key (including the scoring scale) so that teachers can better prepare their students.

Regarding the Foreign Language exam, Ms. Mai Tuyet Nhung (English Language Department, University of Commerce) believes that the biggest difference between the sample exam and recent years is the inclusion of more advanced application-level questions, allowing students with superior foreign language skills to achieve perfect scores. While the question content is diverse and varied, the structure and matrix of this year's exam remain similar to previous years, so candidates should still apply the basic exam preparation strategy based on the 2006 curriculum to ensure a moderately good score. Even the top 10% of application-level questions are within the 2006 general education curriculum; however, candidates need to have a solid grasp of the knowledge and apply it appropriately to achieve maximum points.

Candidates can focus on their studies with peace of mind.

Commenting on the 2024 high school graduation exam sample math test, teacher Luu Huy Thuong from the Hocmai Education System said that the math exam was stable and the difficulty level was equivalent to the 2023 exam. Most questions were at the knowledge and comprehension level, with only the last five questions being high-level application questions used to differentiate students.

Regarding the last five questions, Mr. Thuong noted that the actual exam might be a different type of question, and the sample exam cannot cover all types of high-level application questions. Therefore, to achieve a score of 9+, in addition to mastering the skills, focusing solely on the sample exam will make it difficult to achieve the maximum score. Thus, it is necessary to study a wider range of high-level application question types.

Offering advice to this year's candidates, Mr. Thuong suggested that during the upcoming exam preparation period, candidates need a study plan that aligns with their goals. For example, if the goal is simply to graduate, they should focus on basic knowledge. With the goal of achieving a score of 9+, to complete the exam within 90 minutes, they need to master transformation skills, use calculators, and thoroughly review and expand on advanced application math problems beyond those found in the sample exam.

In the final year of organizing the high school graduation exam under the 2006 general education program, the Ministry of Education and Training basically maintained the same structure as the 2023 high school graduation exam. At the same time, to prepare for a new phase, the exam questions included a reasonable increase in content related to practical application, gradually moving closer to a competency-based assessment approach, in line with the goals and requirements for developing students' competencies and qualities as outlined in the 2018 general education program.

With the current difficulty level of the exam, candidates aiming for a passing grade in the high school graduation exam only need to review and master the textbook knowledge to easily achieve a score of 6-7. If using the high school graduation exam results for university admissions, especially to top universities, candidates need to study hard and prepare thoroughly, mastering basic knowledge, developing analytical and problem-solving skills, and exploring and expanding their understanding of practical applications to achieve high results.
