Analysis of the high school graduation exam scores released by the Ministry of Education and Training shows a dramatic increase in scores for the humanities subjects (Literature, History, Geography) nationwide this year.
With 704,024 candidates taking the exam, the average score for Block C nationwide was 20.95 points. In contrast, last year's average score for this block was 18.97. Thus, this year's average score has increased by nearly 2 points compared to 2023.
Considering each score threshold separately, the number of candidates achieving a score of 20 or higher in this exam group this year is over 450,000, an increase of more than 1.6 times compared to last year. The higher the score threshold, the number of candidates achieving this score increases several times, even dozens of times, compared to last year.
Specifically, at the score mark of 27 or higher, the number of candidates who achieved this was 23,343, a 6.3-fold increase compared to last year.
At the 28-point mark or higher, the number of candidates who achieved this score was 7,620, a 10.3-fold increase compared to last year.
With a score of 29 points or higher, the number of candidates who achieved this was 956, a 36.8-fold increase compared to last year.
Specifically for scores of 29.5 and above, a total of 121 candidates nationwide achieved this level, compared to only 1 candidate last year – a 121-fold increase.
Notably, this exam group boasts 19 top-scoring students. All of them achieved a score of 29.75. In contrast, last year no candidates reached this score.

The sharp increase in scores for Group C subjects is attributed to a significant rise in individual scores for Literature, History, and Geography. In particular, the number of scores of 9 and 10 in all three subjects reached a record high.
Specifically in Literature, this year the number of scores of 9 or higher increased significantly nationwide. Among them, 2 candidates achieved a perfect score of 10, 1,843 candidates scored 9.75, and 14,198 candidates scored 9.5… The total number of candidates with scores of 9 or higher nationwide is 92,055. Nationwide, more than 687,000 papers scored 7 or higher, accounting for 64.57% of the total number of candidates.
Many provinces surprised with their scores in this subject. For example, Bac Ninh accounted for nearly one-third of the country's 9.75 score in Literature; out of every 10 students in Ninh Binh, 7 achieved a Literature score of 8 or higher in the high school graduation exam; and out of every 4 students in Tra Vinh who took the Literature exam, more than 1 achieved a score of 9.
As for History, the average score this year is 6.57 points, compared to 6.03 last year. This subject also has nearly three times the number of perfect scores compared to last year, with 2,108 papers achieving a score of 10 (in 2023 there were 789 papers with a score of 10).
In Geography, the average score this year is 7.19 points, more than 1 point higher than last year (6.15 points in 2023). The most common score achieved by candidates is 7.25, compared to 6.25 points last year. There were 3,175 candidates who achieved a perfect score of 10, while only 35 candidates achieved it last year, an increase of over 90%.
For the same reason, many experts predict that the university entrance exam cutoff scores for Group C this year will increase sharply, by 1-3 points compared to last year.
One province unexpectedly climbed nearly 50 places in the Literature exam scores of the 2024 high school graduation exam . Previously ranked 51st, Tra Vinh province unexpectedly rose to second place nationwide in the Literature exam scores of the 2024 high school graduation exam, only behind Ninh Binh province.
