The University of Melbourne (Australia) has just announced many changes in its admission policy specifically for Vietnamese people, which will take effect from the next July intake. Notably, the decision to nearly double the scope of direct admission for Vietnamese students based on their grade point average (GPA) in grade 12, from grade 12 to 23 specialized schools and key schools in three major cities: Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang.

According to Mr. Lam Minh Khoa, the representative of Melbourne University admissions in Vietnam, the schools on the direct admission list are at the top in terms of admission scores for grade 10, high school graduation exam scores and have many former students who achieved good results while studying abroad at the school. "This is the first time in the past 10 years that Melbourne University has expanded the list since applying the direct admission policy," Mr. Khoa added.

In addition, if coming from schools not on the above list, students can also submit SAT/ACT or AP scores in parallel with their GPA instead of having to take an additional university preparation course as before. At the master's level, the school also expanded its direct admission scope, accepting graduates from most universities in Vietnam, not limited to top schools (section 1). All must meet a certain score level depending on the major.

"Despite expanding the scope of admission, the University of Melbourne does not accept a large number of applications but chooses to 'tighten' the quality of input with a high GPA requirement, from 8.5 and above for schools on the direct admission list. This also helps students have the ability to keep up with the lectures. And in some specific majors that limit the number of international students such as dental health, we will consider the scores from high to low until enough," Mr. Khoa shared.

Another notable point is the scholarship opportunities. After the new policies come into effect, the University of Melbourne plans to accept more Vietnamese international students than before. Therefore, the scholarship conditions will tend to increase to ensure competitiveness, mainly for the 10,000 and 20,000 AUD (165-329 million VND) categories. "The 50-100% scholarship conditions may remain the same because the current requirements are close to the maximum limit," said Mr. Khoa.

Previously, the University of Melbourne held an information day for Vietnamese students and parents in Ho Chi Minh City in October 2023. This is the third year the university has held an information day in Vietnam and for the first time, representatives and professors from various faculties came directly to share and answer questions from students. Currently, the university has about 600 Vietnamese students, most of whom are studying business, science and engineering.

The University of Melbourne is a member of the Group of Eight, a coalition of eight leading Australian universities, ranked 1st in Australia and 14th in the world according to QS World University Rankings 2024. In addition to the University of Melbourne, seven other schools have direct admission policies for Vietnamese students, each with different criteria. The schools also have admission representatives in Vietnam.

According to statistics from the Australian Department of Education, 746,080 international students are studying in Australia as of September 2023. Of these, Vietnam has nearly 30,000 international students, ranking 6th after China, India, Nepal, Colombia and the Philippines. To live in Australia at the present time, the Australian Department of Home Affairs advises international students to ensure finances of about 25,000 USD (600 million VND) per year.
