In particular, math is considered a factor that changes the average score in many traditional groups such as A00, A01, B00 and social science groups such as D01, D14, D15. Experts all predict that the standard scores of the majors that recruit these groups this year will fluctuate strongly in a downward direction.

Math scores hit multi-year low

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, the average math score this year was only 4.78 - a record low in many years. More than 56% of candidates scored below average (<5 points), only 12% scored 7 points or higher.

In contrast to math, physics scored an average of approximately 7. More than 53% of candidates scored 7 points or more, nearly 4,000 candidates scored 10 points. Meanwhile, chemistry scored an average of 6.06, lower than in 2024, with nearly 30% of candidates below average, only about 33% scored ≥7 points.

The average score for English is only 5.38, nearly 40% of candidates scored below 5 points, only 15% scored ≥7 points, leaving only 141 points of 10. The average score for Literature is 7, nearly 60% of candidates scored ≥7 points, only 6.2% below average.

The remaining subjects, especially the new subjects according to the 2028 General Education Program such as information technology, economics , law, and technology, have quite even scores in the range of 6-7 points.

Master Phung Quan, admissions expert at the University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University), commented: "Math is the center of this year's score spectrum, becoming a major barrier for the A00, A01, B00 and D01 combinations. Meanwhile, physics will help maintain the scores of the A00 and A01 combinations in the context of the decline of the other two subjects.

But the below average rate in chemistry increases, reducing the scores of the A00 and B00 combinations. Low English scores directly affect the majors considering combinations D01, D14, D15. Combinations with literature subjects such as C00, D01, D14 will maintain a relatively good standard score.

Although the top schools still maintain a high level of admission thanks to combined admission (international certificates, interviews...), the benchmark scores at average and lower schools are expected to decrease significantly. This opens up wide opportunities for admission for candidates with scores of 21 - 25".

The benchmark will decrease by 1-3 points.

Mr. Quan predicts that the benchmark scores for traditional combinations in the 2025 admissions will fluctuate significantly, decreasing compared to last year.

Specifically, the A00 group (math - physics - chemistry) is likely to decrease by 1-2 points. The A01 group (math - physics - English) also faces a decrease of 1.5 - 2.5 points as both math and English have low scores. The B00 group (math - chemistry - biology) is expected to have the sharpest decrease among the main groups, ranging from 1 - 2.5 points.

The benchmark score for the C00 group (literature - history - geography) may fluctuate little. The D01 group (math - literature - English) may decrease by 1 - 2 points due to the influence of the two subjects math and English. The D14 and D15 groups (including English) are expected to decrease by 1 - 2.5 points.

Meanwhile, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Hoai Thang, head of the training department of the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University), predicts that the admission scores for majors with the A00 and B00 combinations will decrease the most, by an average of 2-3 points depending on the major, in schools that recruit for this combination.

For schools with benchmark scores that are not too high each year, the benchmark scores are unlikely to fluctuate much.

Faced with the reality of this year's high school exam score distribution, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Luu Thuy Ngan, Vice Principal of the University of Information Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University), said that the school will adjust the previously announced admission score threshold (floor score) (22.5 - 24 points).

Dr. Lam Thanh Hien, principal of Lac Hong University, also predicted that this year's benchmark score will decrease by an average of 2-3 points, especially for combinations of math and English such as A00, B00, D01.

According to him, this year's high school exam is very difficult, especially in math and English, leading to a score range of 6-7 points; 9-10 points are quite rare. Therefore, hot majors and top schools will have little change, and may remain the same or decrease slightly (0.5 - 1 point) in some majors due to high competition. However, for majors with a combination of admission methods such as academic records, competency assessments or international certificates, the expected admission score will remain stable or fluctuate slightly.

According to Master Cu Xuan Tien - Head of Admissions and Student Affairs Department of the University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University), this year's benchmark scores will tend to decrease significantly compared to last year. The main reason is that the average scores of some important subjects such as math, chemistry, and biology have all decreased significantly, leading to the total scores of many admission combinations also decreasing.

Specifically, the A00 and A01 groups, due to a sharp decrease in math scores, will likely see their benchmark scores for engineering and technology majors decrease by 1-2 points. The B00 group, with its average chemistry and biology scores both decreasing, will also see its benchmark scores for medicine, pharmacy, and natural sciences decrease by about 1.5 - 2.5 points.

Block D01, D07 with math and English subjects have no growth in scores, so the expected benchmark score will also decrease by 1-2 points.

Block C has little fluctuation.

According to Mr. Tien, this year the University of Economics and Law will recruit 6 groups (A00, A01, D01, D07, X25, X26), an increase of two groups compared to 2024. Of which, math and English are the two main subjects for recruitment, so the expected benchmark score will also decrease compared to 2024.

"Currently, the school's admissions board is considering adjusting the difference in admission scores for combinations of math and English to ensure the rights of candidates. Official information will be announced before July 21.

In addition, this year the school allows candidates with international English certificates to choose between converting them into English subject scores in the admission combination or adding bonus points to the total score of the admission combination," Mr. Tien added.

According to Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan - Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, most of the school's majors have a combination of math - physics, math - chemistry or math - English, so it is predicted that the standard score for the high school graduation exam of the school can be extended from 17 - 25 points (decreased by 1-2 points, depending on the major).

"Thus, the benchmark scores for chemical technology, biotechnology, environment... are likely to decrease sharply. Engineering majors will decrease less because math scores are low but physics scores are high. The benchmark scores for business management majors that consider math and literature will also decrease relatively. As for law majors (which consider group C00), the benchmark scores will likely remain stable like last year," Mr. Nhan predicted.

Dr. Pham Tan Ha (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University) said that majors that include math and English will be affected in a downward direction because in reality, the number of candidates who scored 7 points or higher is less than last year.

"Normally, candidates who have a good chance of being admitted to the school must have a score of 7 or higher in each subject, so the school's benchmark score for block D01 will definitely decrease this year. Meanwhile, the benchmark score for block C00 will not fluctuate much, likely the same as last year," Mr. Ha predicted.

The medical and pharmaceutical industry "cools down"

Regarding the specific benchmark scores of industry groups, Mr. Phung Quan predicted: "Engineering and technology industries that use the A00 combination as their main combination will be clearly affected. The low average scores in math and English will affect high-tech industries such as artificial intelligence, information technology and data science, many schools consider the A01 combination.

Because all three B00 subjects have low average scores, this year's medical and pharmaceutical majors will cool down with a significant decrease in standard scores. Although economics, international business, English, marketing... are still attractive, their scores will decrease compared to last year."

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Khoi, head of training department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, also predicted that the standard scores for the school's majors this year will be lower than last year.

MSc. Truong Thi Ngoc Bich, Director of the Information and Communication Center of the University of Economics and Finance, Ho Chi Minh City (UEF), predicts that this year's university admission scores will fluctuate, in which combinations with math or English or combinations with math and English such as A00, A01, D01 will have a change in admission scores. Especially in highly competitive fields such as logistics and supply chain management, marketing, business administration, communications... there will also be a "cooling down".

"With the above score range, UEF determines the score for receiving applications based on the method of considering high school graduation exam scores as 15 points, considering high school transcripts (scores of three subjects for admission) as 18 points, Ho Chi Minh City National University's capacity assessment test score as 600/1,200 points, and V-SAT score as 225/450 points. The school's benchmark score this year may decrease slightly compared to the benchmark score in 2024 by 1-2 points depending on the major," said Ms. Bich.

Carefully review the admission information of the schools.

Master Pham Thai Son, Director of the Admissions and Communications Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, said: "The score scale has decreased because the exam questions are highly differentiated, so there will be much fewer candidates with high scores than last year. The level of 8 points or higher is less than last year in many subjects such as math, literature, physics, chemistry, and English.

I predict that the school's benchmark score this year will decrease, but not much, at 17 - 24 points, about 1 point lower than last year."

MSc. Cu Xuan Tien advises candidates not to worry too much about fluctuating admission scores. Because with the new admission regulations, this year all methods must be considered simultaneously (early admission is eliminated), with equivalent conversion of admission scores, so the chance of admission by considering high school graduation exam scores will be higher than in 2024.

"The important thing now is that you should carefully refer to the admission information of the schools. In particular, pay special attention to information about the floor score, proof of bonus points, conversion points, equivalent conversion principles and arrange your wishes scientifically to optimize your chances of being admitted to the majors and schools you love.

This year, the benchmark score will decrease, so don't be afraid to register because last year's benchmark score is too high compared to your score because this could cause you to lose the opportunity to enter the major or school you love," Mr. Tien noted.

July 19: Festival for choosing university and college admission wishes in 2025

In order to support candidates in choosing their admission wishes, Tuoi Tre newspaper coordinated with the Department of Higher Education ( Ministry of Education and Training ) to organize two festivals to choose university and college admission wishes in 2025 simultaneously in Ho Chi Minh City (University of Technology, 268 Ly Thuong Kiet, Dien Hong Ward), and Hanoi (Hanoi University of Technology).

With the support of Vingroup Corporation, the festival took place on July 19, with the participation of experts from the Ministry of Education and Training, universities, and experienced career counselors. All questions from parents and candidates about registering for admission and information related to admission will be thoroughly answered by experts.

Hundreds of direct consulting booths from universities, colleges, vocational schools and study abroad consulting units with a strong consulting team are also present in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to answer all questions about enrollment for candidates.
