With its open spaces, extensive book collection, and diverse and enriching activities, the Provincial Library has become an attractive destination for many young readers during the summer. This helps to cultivate a reading habit and passion among children, contributing to the development of reading culture in the community.
Children participate in activities at the Provincial Library.
Visiting the Provincial Library on a weekend, we saw library staff busy assisting readers in searching for their favorite literature, life skills, and comic books. The children's room was especially lively on weekends due to themed activities. In an open-plan space of approximately 200 square meters, designed in a modern style, and housing around 40,000 books of various genres such as comics and reference books, children could freely choose their favorite books and find suitable spots to explore knowledge. After reading, they would participate in themed activities.
Le Dieu Anh, a 5th-grade student from Thanh Hoa City, shared: "For the past four years, every summer I've been able to go to the library to read books and stories and do my homework. In addition, each week we participate in activities with different themes. Library staff organize activities to explore knowledge, work in groups, and draw pictures for us to participate in. Those students/teams who answer many questions correctly are praised and rewarded. This has made us more diligent in reading to gain more knowledge and understanding."
Similarly, Nguyen Nhat Linh, a third-grade student from Thanh Hoa City, shared that going to the library not only allows her to read books but also to gain more knowledge through beneficial activities organized by the Provincial Library. These activities help her feel relaxed and happy during the summer while also developing teamwork skills, participating in drawing, and acquiring other useful skills. In particular, she gets to know many friends who share a passion for reading and talk with them about things she loves.
While on summer vacation with his grandmother, Nguyen Viet Thien Phu ( Hanoi ) was captivated by the atmosphere and activities at the Thanh Hoa Provincial Library. Nguyen Viet Thien Phu said: “I often allocate time to go to the library to read and study because it has many good books that I love, and the space is airy and comfortable, allowing me to read and explore knowledge freely.”
Not only is the library an attractive destination for children, but it's also a reassuring choice for parents to bring their children to read and participate in activities. Ms. Tran Thanh Nga from Dong Tho ward said: “I feel very reassured bringing my child to the library to read. The space is airy, quiet, well-lit, and has many books suitable for children. Since going to the library, my child has significantly reduced the time spent on phones and iPads and is more diligent in reading. That's why I bring my child to the library every summer.”
Ms. Thieu Thi Nghia, Head of the Reader Services Department at the Provincial Library, said: "To create a beneficial playground for children during the summer, the Provincial Library has intensified the organization of children's activities. Every week, library staff will select themes and organize folk games, creative corners: painting, making handmade crafts; fun learning and reading activities: storytelling based on books, reading books and writing reviews, reading books and answering questions; children have fun experiencing different professions. These activities have created enthusiasm for children when they come to the library, contributing to fostering a passion for reading and developing life skills for children."
Not only the children's room but also other rooms such as the reading room and lending room attract a large number of young readers. During this summer, the Provincial Library regularly welcomed about 300-400 readers each day of the week. From May to now, the children's room has served more than 36,850 readers; the reading room has served 27,900 readers. To achieve these results, the Provincial Library has focused on building a book collection, decorating the reading rooms with an open, child-friendly space, and organizing technical processing and classification of books in the rooms to make searching and retrieving books easier. At the same time, from the beginning of the year, the Provincial Library has proactively developed an activity plan, especially for the summer; increasing the supply of new books and newspapers suitable for the age and level of each target group, especially children.
In parallel, the Provincial Library adds thousands of books each year to refresh its collection. For example, in 2023, the library added and technically processed 14,560 books; added 172 newspapers and magazines; and collected 263 local history documents. Furthermore, the Provincial Library has actively encouraged bookstores, companies, organizations, and individuals to participate in building its book collection, contributing to a rich, diverse, and useful library. In addition, the Provincial Library has promoted the dissemination, introduction, and display of excellent books and summer activities to attract readers.
To better serve its readers, the Provincial Library will continue to focus on innovating its reader service activities; continuously adding new and diverse book sources; strengthening its facilities; and assigning staff to be on duty regularly to welcome and support readers of all ages... With these innovations, the Provincial Library will become a reliable address for readers and parents during the summer months.
