Since the fierce days of the Vietnam War (1972), the people of the capital Amsterdam were ready to share the losses of the people of Hanoi, joining hands to rebuild the capital after the war.

On September 5, 1985, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted officially opened its first school year. The school is the crystallization of the Vietnam - Netherlands friendship, a symbol of the aspiration for peace and development.

On the occasion of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted celebrating its 40th anniversary (1985 - 2025) and receiving the First Class Labor Medal, teacher Tran Thuy Duong, Principal of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, shared with Vietnam Women's Newspaper about teaching and training at the school.

PV: When mentioning Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, everyone will immediately remember a leading school in the capital and the whole country in terms of leading education with hundreds of students achieving high prizes in international olympic competitions. So, what is the secret in teaching and learning that helps the school's students achieve such achievements?

Teacher Tran Thuy Duong: Over the years, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted has always maintained its leading position in key education, training talents for the capital and the country with 280 international awards and 1,354 national awards.

In order to best develop students' abilities and move towards a comprehensive and friendly educational environment, the school's Board of Directors and teachers have created conditions for students to establish and operate a system of 54 clubs with a variety of activities.

The students show a positive and impressive energy when they set up and run clubs or events outside of regular school hours. Their passion for these activities has had a positive impact on their training and learning in class, so the school always creates all conditions and expands activities to create a creative playground for students.

Recognizing the importance of STEM education, applying scientific knowledge of AI, Robotics, and information technology, for many years now, the Board of Directors has mobilized investment resources for clubs related to this field.

Students of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted were awarded scholarships at the school's 40th anniversary celebration.

PV: What educational methods does the school use to help students develop dynamism and creativity in learning?

Teacher Tran Thuy Duong: Teachers at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted always aim to give the best care to students. We realize that each student is an individual. They may have different learning styles and teachers must respect those individuals, as long as during the learning process, they reach the common goal that they, their parents and teachers desire.

To encourage individuality in students' learning, school teachers will find out what learning methods the students have to guide and encourage them. Sometimes, students will have slightly different thoughts and learning methods, but if teachers discover that it is a good and creative method, teachers will always encourage and motivate them. That is the direction to develop a talented student.

PV: Not only achieving many achievements in teaching and learning, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted is also a pioneer school in the capital in creating resources, developing the Party, aiming for higher goals - creating a generation of students who are both red and specialized?

Teacher Tran Thuy Duong: Along with nurturing and promoting students' outstanding abilities, the school also focuses on guiding and educating students on political awareness, ethics, and revolutionary ideology. From 2022 to present, the school's Party Committee has the highest number of students admitted to the Party among high schools in Hanoi with 21 Party members.

On March 25, 2025, the Party Committee of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted held a Party admission ceremony for 3 outstanding students: Vu Tuan Minh (Grade 12 Geography), Dong Minh Anh (Grade 12 Geography) and Nguyen Ngoc Anh Duong (Grade 12 Geography). These are all students with excellent achievements in studying and training.

PV: How does the school carry out Party development work, madam?

Teacher Tran Thuy Duong: First of all, the discovery of resources is done through the Youth Union, homeroom teachers, and school departments. Discovering outstanding people does not necessarily mean winning high prizes in national and international competitions for excellent students. What is important is that you are students with youthful enthusiasm, always spreading positive values, and having the spirit of sharing and contributing to the community.

After that, the school will meet with students and parents to understand their thoughts and aspirations. When the students are mature enough and have aspirations and wishes, the school will send them to attend a Party sympathy training class.

When we admitted the first student Party members, this was a pioneering activity in Party development among students, because at that time, no school in Hanoi had dared to do this work.

Although the initial steps were difficult, we found solutions to overcome them. Students and teachers of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted are always creative in perfecting the training and admission process for Party members.

During that process, the school always integrates ideological education programs into teachers' classes, on the anniversary days of the founding of the Youth Union or volunteer activities... The "Learning about the Party's history" club was born, with weekly activities in person or online, helping students have a place to meet, share and connect with each other with the guidance of teachers.
