From May 10, Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) adjusted the average electricity price to more than 2,200 VND/kWh (excluding VAT), an increase of 4.8%. In the context of many economic difficulties and people's incomes not recovering, the increase in electricity prices during the hot season has caused many households to have additional spending burdens.
Worry about the burden of spending
In recent days, many households in the province have clearly felt the pressure of rising electricity bills. Mr. Dang Van Hai, in Hai Thang commune (Tien Lu) shared: Before, my family had to spend about 700,000 - 800,000 VND on electricity each month, now it has increased to more than 1 million VND due to using more air conditioners and refrigerators. The increase in electricity prices is not much, but combined with the increase in gasoline, gas, food... all of which have forced us to recalculate our spending.
Mr. Le Van Truong in Thang Loi commune (Van Giang) also expressed his concern: My family uses about 400kWh of electricity per month, according to the new price, the electricity bill will increase by about 65,000 VND. In the summer, we use fans and air conditioners continuously, making it difficult to save money.
There are more than 10 freezers and refrigerators running 24/7.
Not only households, many small businesses are also facing difficulties. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai, owner of a grocery store in Vuong town (Tien Lu) said: My store has more than 10 freezers and refrigerators that operate 24/7, plus air conditioners, lighting... each month, I pay 4-5 million VND for electricity. The price of electricity has increased but revenue and profit have not increased, even decreased due to weak purchasing power, so it is very difficult.
Find ways to get by and save
According to Vietnam Electricity (EVN), the specific increase in electricity bills will depend on consumption. The group using 101–200kWh/month will increase by about 20,000 VND; from 201–300kWh, it will increase by about 34,000 VND; from 301–400kWh, it will increase by more than 49,000 VND, and from 400kWh and above, it will increase by about 65,000 VND/month. However, that is an estimate under normal conditions, not including peak hot weather that causes electricity consumption to spike.
Faced with this situation, many families have proactively sought ways to save electricity. Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong in Lac Hong commune (Van Lam) said: Most of the electrical appliances in my house are old and have been used for many years, so they are not energy-saving. Therefore, my family is planning to gradually replace the appliances with more energy-saving ones, but we do not have enough money to replace them all at once.
Mr. Nguyen Van Sang in Thuy Loi commune (Tien Lu) chose a simple way to save: Turn off the fan when not needed, only turn on the lights when necessary, so each month he only consumes less than 150kWh, so the increase in electricity price does not affect much. However, saving is still the top priority.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong's family in Chi Minh commune (Khoai Chau) chose to invest about 30 million VND to install a 3kW rooftop solar panel system (6 panels), producing about 12kWh/day, used during the day for washing machines, cooking... Thanks to that, each month only costs 300,000-500,000 VND for electricity, saving nearly 1 million VND.
From households to stores, everyone is aware that just a small change in habits can save hundreds of thousands of dong in electricity bills each month.
Tips to save electricity effectively
In the summer, the demand for air conditioners and fans increases, causing electricity bills to easily "escalate". Hung Yen Electricity Company recommends that people should: Choose energy-saving devices: Prioritize using products with energy labels of 4 stars or higher.
Use air conditioning wisely: Set the temperature to 25–27°C and use a fan to circulate cool air. Reducing the temperature by 5°C can increase electricity consumption by up to 40%. Unplug when not in use: Many devices such as TVs and computers still consume electricity in standby mode.
Replace LED lights: Although the initial cost is higher, LEDs consume less electricity, are durable, and reduce long-term repair and replacement costs.
Take advantage of natural light: Open windows, pull curtains to let light in, limit turning on lights during the day.
Regular equipment maintenance: Ensures efficient operation of machinery, avoiding unnecessary waste of electricity.
Although the increase is not too large, with the overall cost of living increasing, saving electricity is a practical solution, helping people reduce economic pressure and contributing to efficient energy use.
