Nail thieves rampage at Linh Xuan intersection, Ho Chi Minh City residents angry and scared

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên07/05/2023

From February to early May 2023, many people traveling on National Highway 1 (from Station 2 overpass to Song Than overpass) when reaching the Linh Xuan intersection (Linh Xuan Ward, Thu Duc City) had their motorbikes run over nails and their tires were flat.

Locals, especially motorbike taxi drivers, said that Linh Xuan intersection is a vital section between National Highway 1 and National Highway 1K (extended Pham Van Dong Street), and the rampant nail thieves here are extremely dangerous.

Continue rolling the nail after changing the core.

At 3:00 p.m. on May 6, under the scorching sun, Mr. TQS (26 years old, residing in Tam Binh Ward, Thu Duc City) was sweating profusely as he led his motorbike with a flat tire on Highway 1, through Linh Xuan intersection.

Upon inspection, Mr. S.'s tire and inner tube were pierced by two diamond-shaped pieces of nails. Because the hole in the inner tube was too large, Mr. S. had to replace the inner tube with a new one for 100,000 VND.

Mr. S's motorbike was crushed by a diamond-shaped nail while passing Linh Xuan intersection.

Mr. S. said that this was not the first time his car had been hit by a nail on the above mentioned road section. Previously, at 3:00 a.m. on May 4, Mr. S. was driving on National Highway 1 (from the Station 2 overpass to the Song Than overpass), when he had just passed Linh Xuan intersection, his vehicle swerved. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the front wheel was broken due to a diamond-shaped nail.

"Luckily I was driving slowly, otherwise the car would have been wobbly and about to fall. If someone was driving at high speed or an inexperienced woman, they would have fallen. But on this stretch of road, there are containers, trucks, and passenger cars running at such a high density that I can't even imagine the consequences," Mr. S. said indignantly.

That same afternoon, Thanh Nien reporters were present at the area where people reported the incident to record the situation of nail thieves. In just about 10 minutes, the reporters picked up more than 30 pieces of iron nails.

Through observation, the nail pieces are diamond-shaped, flat, small, about 2 cm, painted blue-gray (similar to the color of plastic) so they are very difficult to detect. In this area, people used black paint to write a warning: "There are nails on the road, people drive slowly".

In just 10 minutes, Thanh Nien reporters picked up dozens of diamond-shaped nail pieces at Linh Xuan intersection. Local residents also wrote warnings about nail thieves.

Seeing us filming, as if he had been upset for a long time, Mr. Tuan (50 years old, a traditional motorbike taxi driver) came to express his frustration. Mr. Tuan said that in just 30 minutes on the afternoon of May 6, he had to change and patch the tire twice in a row.

"I drove from Thu Duc wholesale market back here (Linh Xuan intersection), the car ran into a nail, had to replace the inner tube for 100,000 VND, then continued taking the passenger. I drove back here, and ran into another nail. It was so hot that I wanted to walk, but the salary from driving was enough to replace the inner tube. Today, I'm considered hungry!", Mr. Tuan looked sad.

3 months to smoke more than 10 kg of nails

Receiving information from Thanh Nien reporters, on the morning of May 7, the Linh Xuan Ward nail suction team organized to suck up dozens of diamond-shaped nail pieces at the Linh Xuan intersection.

The leader of Linh Xuan Ward People's Committee confirmed that nail thieves have existed for a long time on National Highway 1. Nail thieves were rampant at Linh Xuan intersection at the end of February and on the occasion of April 30 - May 1.

Receiving information from Thanh Nien reporters, the nail suction team organized to suck up a lot of nails on the above mentioned road section.

The Youth Union of Linh Xuan Ward has created a group on Zalo for people to promptly inform the authorities about security and order issues in the area. Through that, the ward received many reports from people about vehicles passing through the area often being hit by nails, causing dangerous situations.

Immediately upon receiving the feedback, Linh Xuan Ward established a nail suction team, regularly organizing nail suction on the above-mentioned route. At the same time, Linh Xuan Ward Police coordinated with the local auto repair shops and scrap metal shops to sign a commitment not to spread nails.

Initially, Linh Xuan Ward Police contacted the police of neighboring wards, propagandized people to fight against nail thieves and received attention and sympathy.

Mr. Duong Le Dai, Secretary of the Linh Xuan Ward Youth Union, said that since the beginning of March, the ward has sucked up about 2 kg of diamond-shaped nails. Local residents agreed and made their own nail-suction trucks, sucking up about 10 kg.

People supported and made their own nail suction vehicles. Because the number of nails sucked up was too much, people had to use cloth to cover their hands to quickly pick up the nails.

In addition, the police also deployed forces, ambushed and monitored the roads. However, the detection and handling of the case encountered many difficulties because this area borders Binh Duong province.

In the coming time, Linh Xuan Ward will take stronger measures to deal with nail thieves by checking auto repair shops and installing more surveillance cameras in the area.
