As a "famous" face in the Northern acting community, Doan Quoc Dam continuously appears in popular TV series. Although he does not always take on long roles, the number of roles that actor Doan has owned makes many people admire.
Sharing about whether he was "favored" by directors to receive many supporting roles or not, Doan Quoc Dam frankly admitted that he had to "play tricks" to get roles:
"Many people ask me why I play so many supporting roles. I can only say that my family is poor, so I have to work hard to make ends meet.
Honestly, the "bosses" at VFC also wanted to build a more complete and deeper image for me. Therefore, when I appeared in many films with supporting roles, not only me but also the directors were scolded a lot by the "bosses".
I asked the directors to "bend the rules" a little, for example, I begged them not to put my name on the cast list when presenting it to the "boss", just let me act. When the film was finished, if they saw me on film, "it was too late", there was no way to reshoot or cut the role anymore".

The actor also said that he himself did not have the orientation of "having to play the main role". The actor said: "Since I first started my career, I thought that I would not follow the path of becoming famous through the main role. I am not as handsome as Manh Truong, not as lovely as Hong Dang, nor do I have the charisma like Viet Anh, so I decided to do short, strange, supporting roles, that is the right path for me".
Doan Quoc Dam shared that being the main role not only makes the actors very tired but also does not give them enough time to "regenerate their thoughts and energy": "If I play a supporting role, I will have time to rest between scenes, have time to think about what I will act next.
But if I play the main role, I have to act from morning to night. As soon as I finish this scene, I have to remove my makeup, change clothes, and continue acting. The work intensity is too high, sometimes it makes me run out of ideas."
Although he knows that playing the main role will give him more opportunities to "make money" and build a better image, Doan Quoc Dam said he still wants to have fun with his career:
"Actually, the main purpose of any job is to make money, and being an actor is no exception. I also hope to make a lot of money, from the very job that my parents gave me money to go to school. But I still want to do supporting roles, to be free to be creative, instead of doing main roles that are "reliable".
Sometimes I feel selfish because I only want to satisfy my passion without taking care of my family. When I need money to take care of my family, I feel guilty. I used to swear to myself that now I have to work to earn money, stop thinking, it doesn't matter if someone says I'm a bad actor, as long as I play the main role and have money... However, when I hold the script, I can't "absorb" the role.
The interesting thing is that in every role, no matter how small, Doan Quoc Dam always finds a special highlight for his role. At the press conference to launch the movie Lang Trong Pho , Doan Quoc Dam impressed many people when he played the role of Men with a hoarse voice like someone with damaged vocal cords.
The actor said that this detail was not originally in the script, but he added it to give the role more depth: "In the movie "Village in the City", Men's wife had a second child but miscarried. He was very sad about this, so he turned to drinking to drown his sorrows. Because of this, his health declined. After a near-death illness, Men lost his voice and from then on had this voice."
Doan Quoc Dam shared at the press conference.
Doan Quoc Dam said he knows that this voice can make the audience uncomfortable, but he is willing to accept "brickbats":
"Actually, many people say that in every film I act in, I try to create a certain characteristic to leave an impression. But I observe and see that in real life, each person has their own characteristics, so I decided to give my character their own characteristics. I don't mind being told to "do something" every time I have a new role. Because in reality, if that character is special enough, I won't add or subtract anything."
The movie Village in the City revolves around the lives of Hieu (Duy Hung), Hoai (Tran Van), Men (Doan Quoc Dam), Thuong (Le Quyen)... In this part of the movie, Hieu and Men's fish pond is confiscated by the commune to build a factory, so he and Hoai have to go to the city to find a way to make a living.
With a hot temper, no expertise and a criminal record, Hieu had difficulty finding a job. From here, conflicts began to arise between the "brutal couple" Hieu and Hoai. Although Men and Thuong stayed in their homeland, they also had their own problems and cracks.
The movie Village in the City will air on VTV1 from Monday to Friday every week from July 31, 2023.
