Unique model of first university autonomy in Vietnam: 'For everything, except money'

What is more wonderful is that the School of Business and Management (HSB) has truly become our common home with tens of thousands of successful and happy alumni - people with culture, ethics, ideals, passion, who continue to study, work, create every day and make many positive contributions to the sustainable development of organizations, businesses and the country.

"Transform" with the country

In the early 1990s, when the country was undergoing a period of renovation, Vietnamese highereducation faced an urgent need to modernize, be flexible and approach practical needs. In that context, the bold idea of the late Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet was born, about a public university, but with real autonomy – from finance, personnel to academics – to operate as a modern educational institution, ready to compete, self-sustaining and developing.

The idea was accepted and resolutely realized by Professor Nguyen Van Dao - Director of Vietnam National University , Hanoi (VNU) at that time, laying the foundation for the School of Business and Administration (HSB) to be established on July 13, 1995, with a unique philosophy: "For everything, except money".

With unprecedented autonomy in the public education system, HSB has become a pioneer in implementing a modern university governance model: differentiated training programs, teaching technology, management and administration, and continuous content innovation - all designed to closely follow social needs and international standards. The HSB model quickly became a model for VNU-affiliated units and many domestic educational institutions to learn from and replicate the spirit of university autonomy.

From the very beginning, HSB has identified the mission of developing interdisciplinary training programs, strongly innovating, and applying modern knowledge. Thanks to that, the school not only leads in quality, but also pioneers in updating international academic schools, cooperating extensively with businesses, bringing learners closer to practice right in the learning process.

The School of Business and Management (HSB) and the Institute for Non-Traditional Security organize the ASEAN Non-Traditional Security Governance Forum (ACF – MNS).

HSB's distinctive mark

Although starting from “0 VND”, HSB always aspires to affirm its own identity and sets the values of “Creativity – Pioneering – Quality” as the guiding principle for all its development activities over the past 30 years. From that orientation, HSB has built unique academic identities, typically the IBM-MNS academic school – a training and research platform integrating three pillars: Administration – Technology – Security. This is a special direction in the Vietnamese higher education system.

The special feature that makes HSB different is that the school pioneered the opening of the non-traditional security academic school, a completely new field in Vietnam. On January 13, 2019, in response to the urgent need for risk management in the modern business and management environment, HSB established the Center for Research on Management Science and Non-traditional Security Management (NSMS).

Three years later, on the basis of the NSMS activities, the Institute of Non-Traditional Security (INS) was established. This is an autonomous public institution at the university level under the decision of the Prime Minister and is the first interdisciplinary scientific research institution in Vietnam in the field of non-traditional security to meet the country's sustainable development requirements.

The Institute of Non-Traditional Security and the School of Business and Administration have proactively proposed and implemented many scientific topics and scientific researches with newness and high theoretical and practical value. The Institute has coordinated with many agencies, organizations and localities to organize nearly 50 scientific seminars on the field of non-traditional security; implemented 16 provincial/municipal scientific topics in many localities across the country such as topics on Economic Security, Environmental Security, Water Security, Maritime and Port Security... in provinces and cities. Not stopping there, HSB and the Institute of Non-Traditional Security have conducted a series of state-level studies and published international works on non-traditional security.

In parallel with training programs, HSB also invests heavily in knowledge transfer, especially in new topics such as environmental security, economic security, water security, maritime and port security, etc. Research results are not only published internationally, but also directly applied through training courses for leaders in many localities across the country.

For 30 years, HSB has continuously innovated its training programs and forms. To date, HSB has created 6 interdisciplinary bachelor's programs, 3 master's programs and 1 specialized doctoral program, all of which are designed according to the integrated philosophy: knowledge of business administration + non-traditional security management, highly practical, updated with global academic trends. These programs have trained thousands of students and trainees, providing society with a team of experts in business administration, economic security, brand management, risk management - urgent fields in the context of competition and deep integration.

Reach out to the world

After 30 years of construction and development, from a unit with no budget, HSB has grown into a leading autonomous public educational institution, internationally accredited by ACQUIN; training more than 15,000 alumni and students, many of whom hold leadership positions in the public and private sectors. The school currently implements 10 high-quality, interdisciplinary, international standard training programs; maintains and develops the IMB-MNS academic school...

On the path of development, HSB always aims to reach out to the world; this goal is not only reflected in improving the quality of training to meet international standards, but also in expanding cooperation with prestigious global educational institutions. In the future, HSB will continue to lay the foundation for establishing cooperative relationships with many prestigious universities around the world, in order to expand the academic space, improve the quality of training and promote international integration.

More importantly, HSB has affirmed the core values of a university: not only good at theory, but also contributing to solving new social problems, leading the trend of research, training, and fostering high-quality human resources for the country, in the spirit of "Giving everything, except money" - ready to share knowledge, connect businesses and communities, but not becoming a burden on the budget.

With three core values of “Creativity – Pioneering – Quality”, HSB will certainly be brave in creating and dedicating itself to helping learners continuously develop six core values: “Health – Ethics – Will – Talent – Love – Responsibility”. That is the sacred mission throughout the history of HSB which is “training young talents to later become excellent leaders, administrators and managers for both the public and private sectors”.
