Unique rope-dropping cafe in alley of Ho Chi Minh City: Customers get tired necks because the owner is... 'lazy'

A cafe located in an alley in Ho Chi Minh City is causing a stir on social media with its unique way of serving rope. The owner shares the surprising story behind it.

On a cool afternoon in Ho Chi Minh City, I stopped by the peaceful alley number 6 of Tran Phu street, looking for a coffee shop that is being shared on many social networking sites these days.

Unique and interesting style

On the mezzanine floor of a house in the alley, Ms. Bella (27 years old), also known by her customers as Beo, is busy preparing drinks for customers waiting downstairs to buy to go. The owner looks down, while the customers look up to communicate with each other.

After finishing the dish, the owner puts it in a basket, then carefully lowers the string down for the customer to receive the item. The customer then puts money in the basket for the restaurant to pull up. This scene amused Mr. Duy (19 years old, living in District 8), a first-time customer.

"It's really unique! That's also the reason I came to this restaurant. I learned about the restaurant through social media and was impressed by the way the owner served the "thập dây" dish, so I stopped by to try it. Everyone praised the drinks here for being delicious, so I was eager to try them too," the young man said. Like many other guests, Mr. Duy was excited to experience the way the "thập dây" dish was served here.

Thao Phan (26 years old) has also visited this shop twice and said that she first learned about the shop through social media. Because she had free time on the weekend, she invited her friends to come and buy drinks and really liked the shop's unique service.

According to her, strawberry milk is well-known and she also liked it when she first visited. She was impressed by the warmth, enthusiasm, and friendliness of the owner, so if she has the chance, she will come back to support the shop.

Here, the shop has 3 main drinks: strawberry milk, matcha, cocoa with prices ranging from 30,000 VND - 50,000 VND depending on the customer's request. Every day, the shop only sells in the afternoon and evening from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm and is closed on Mondays.

Why do cafes serve drinks by dropping ropes?

When asked about the idea of serving customers in this unique way, Ms. Beo smiled and said that she and a friend opened this restaurant at the end of 2024 at a location in District 10. However, later, because the location was small, she wanted to serve customers better so she moved to this location during the Lunar New Year.

The current location of the shop is a corner of the house of her friend's grandmother - the co-founder of the shop. Initially, she also intended to serve customers like everyone else. "But going up and down between the mezzanine and the ground floor too much makes us lazy," the young girl said happily.

The owner said that most of the houses in this alley are rented on the ground floor and the owner's living space is on the upper floor. So many families prepare a basket to lower the rope every time they pick up the shipper's goods. From here, she came up with the idea of doing the same thing when serving customers at the shop.

At first, she was worried that this way of serving would upset customers. However, beyond her imagination, customers really liked this unique way of dropping ropes. Thanks to a customer sharing it on social media, the restaurant quickly became known to many people, and was crowded with customers, which surprised and made her happy.

"We do small business, not big. In March, because of the difficult business situation, we planned to sell for another month and then temporarily stop. But unexpectedly, customers came to support us so much, so the shop is still open until now," said Ms. Beo.

Working in the field of psychology, for Ms. Beo, selling drinks in the evening is a way to balance her life. The happiness of the young owner is to bring her dedicated drinks to the lovely customers who come to support the shop every day.
