From the story of grandparents
Starting the story about the journey of inventing and perfecting the application “The Deaf People”, the young couple Nguyen Hoang Phu and Phung Khoi Nguyen told us about the days when the idea first formed.
“Our family has elderly people, and communication is quite difficult because they are both hard of hearing. From then on, we had the idea of doing something to help them communicate, and at the same time provide maximum support in daily care,” Hoang Phu shared. Along with that, creating an application to support the hearing impaired has been a long-cherished plan of the young couple, because sign language and hand communication are very difficult to learn and not popular with normal people.
After having an idea, the group started the programming phase, building the features of the application. “At this point, the difficulties officially came to us. At that time, we were only in 8th grade, so we had no experience in programming or interface design. There were times when we had to do it over and over again because the interface was not optimized and difficult to use. In particular, after listening to comments from the instructor and users, the group continued to edit,” Khoi Nguyen recalled.
Up to now, the application “The Deaf People” has been officially completed, users can download it on CH Play to smart devices and use it. According to the introduction, “The Deaf People” consists of 6 main parts: content, feedback, communication, practice, AI chat and connection. In which, the content part will have exercises to support learning hand signs to communicate with the deaf (including alphabets and numbers).
The next main feature is the communication section, where users can use static or animated images, convert text into hand symbols... for convenience in the communication process. In particular, in the connection section, users can directly capture hand symbols and scan them into the application, which will then produce the letter results.
In addition to the difficulty in programming, Hoang Phu and Khoi Nguyen had to work very hard to synthesize and collect information and data to meet the daily communication needs of the subjects. "Up to now, the data source is enough to serve the purpose of daily communication, while helping the subjects quickly express their thoughts and feelings," Hoang Phu expressed.
The application “The Deaf People” has brought the young couple impressive awards: First Prize in the 8th “Quang Ninh Province Youth and Children Creativity Contest” in 2023; Third Prize in the “Quang Ninh Province Science and Technology Contest for High School Students”; Second Prize in the National Finals of the “Youth Informatics” Contest in 2023;...
Teachers and students are united, we can overcome any difficulty.
When asked about the secret to their success in scientific and technical research, both boys shared: “Everything comes from passion, love for science and especially the desire to support and share the difficulties that the elderly and the hearing impaired are facing. Besides, it is indispensable to have teachers who guide, accompany and create the best conditions to help us research and develop the project.”
During the nearly 1.5 years of project development, there were nights when both teachers and students worked hard together to find solutions or days when we had to go back and forth to ask teachers, friends, and contact each hospital to test the product. And finally, the "sweet fruit" has "ripe" from the perseverance, joint efforts, and consensus of both teachers and students.
Up to now, when recalling the early days of project development, teacher Nguyen Thi Bich (Mao Khe I Secondary School) is still very emotional: “When I heard about the idea, I felt that this was a very good topic, with social significance, focusing on vulnerable groups such as the elderly, the hearing impaired, etc. After many trials, the application has produced the best version, which was well evaluated by the teachers and judges and won high prizes in competitions.”
Over the years, Mao Khe I Secondary School has been known as the school of young “inventors” as it has continuously “won” many achievements in research and technical innovation. Since 2010, the school has had representatives participating in youth and children’s creativity competitions at all levels. In particular, in 2017, the school was honored to have students win high prizes at the National Youth Informatics Competition.
Continuing the glorious tradition in the field of scientific research, the board of directors of Mao Khe I Secondary School has outlined a long-term implementation plan so that students have a systematic and professional research path.
Ms. Pham Thi Phu, Principal of Mao Khe I Secondary School, shared: In order to achieve resounding achievements in the field of scientific research, the school has focused on promoting propaganda and popularizing competitions in a synchronous and effective manner. In particular, at the school level, the school organizes STEM clubs, scientific research clubs in classes, organizes Young Informatics competitions, science and technology competitions, etc. to select quality products and projects.
Along with that, the school has had many forms of timely encouragement, rewards, and incentives for teachers and students who have achieved high achievements in scientific research and teaching. From the initial ideas, many applications of the "young inventors" at Mao Khe I Secondary School have been officially put into practice, bringing many values to society.
It is known that, following the project “The Deaf People”, the group of young people Hoang Phu and Khoi Nguyen cherished the idea of creating an application to look up information about nature, culture, history, and economy of Quang Ninh province. With this idea, the group hopes to introduce and strongly promote the potential and strengths of their home province to friends around the world.
