Vietnam wrestling team experiences world tournament before 19th Asiad

We do not expect medal achievements at the 2023 World Wrestling Championship, but at least from the tournament, important players have gained experience and accumulated expertise to compete in the 19th ASIAD.

The 2023 World Wrestling Championships currently taking place in Belgrade (Serbia) is the most professional tournament in the international wrestling world. In this year's competition, the Vietnamese wrestling team sent a team of three athletes, Nguyen Thi My Hanh (62kg), Lai Dieu Thuong (68kg) and Dang Thi Linh (76kg), to participate in order to gain the best experience and accumulate experience to prepare for the 19th Asian Games right after. However, the 2023 World Wrestling Championships is also a tournament to accumulate points to find a chance to compete for the 2024 Olympic ticket, so all athletes are cautious.

All three of our athletes stopped in their events when they met opponents with superior abilities. However, the coaching staff of the Vietnamese women's wrestling team shared that the match had significant professional significance because the Vietnamese athletes had a better grasp of professional techniques and learned more about the Asian opponents participating this time because they will be the ones who are certain to attend the 19th ASIAD in Hangzhou (China).

In preparation for the 19th ASIAD competition, the Vietnamese wrestling team conducted two training sessions with each group of players in Japan and Serbia. For My Hanh, Dieu Thuong, and Dang Thi Linh, they were luckier than their colleagues when they combined training with competing in the world championship - where the best players in the world gathered - so they accumulated significant experience.

The best achievement of the Vietnamese wrestling team when participating in previous ASIADs was the silver medal of athlete Nguyen Thi Lua (ASIAD 2010). Five years ago, the Vietnamese wrestling team participated in ASIAD 18 in 2018 in Indonesia and won 1 bronze medal (My Hanh, 62kg women). In the professional preparation for ASIAD 19 in Hangzhou (China), the wrestling team set a goal of striving to win medals. In Southeast Asia, the Vietnamese wrestling team has many strong athletes and outstanding advantages to be the top in the region. However, in the Asian arena, we are still accumulating from there to try to bring the level of Vietnamese wrestling athletes to shorten the gap with their opponents. It must be seen that wrestling in Asia gathers many world-class and Olympic athletes, so winning medals at the Asian Championships is difficult, finding the opportunity to compete for medals at the Asian Games (ASIAD) is even more difficult.

According to the head of the wrestling department (Department of Sports and Physical Training) and also the leader of the Vietnamese wrestling team at ASIAD 19 - Mr. Ta Tung Duc shared, "The coaching staff of the content groups of the Vietnamese wrestling team have been and are making the most thorough professional preparations for key athletes to compete in ASIAD 19. We combine training programs with competitive matches to help athletes improve their skills and tactics. Above all, each athlete must still have the highest will and the team really hopes that each athlete will surpass their own abilities to compete and achieve the best results."

The wrestling event of the 19th Asian Games will be held from October 4 to 7. Therefore, the Vietnamese wrestling team will move to Hangzhou (China) at the end of September. The athletes who trained in Japan and Serbia will return home and then gather to move to Hangzhou (China).

At the World Wrestling Championship, Nguyen Thi My Hanh lost to Bilyana Dudova (Bulgaria) 1-6 in the women's 62kg category in the round of 32; Lai Dieu Thuong lost to Ami Ishii (Japan) 0-2 in the women's 68kg category in the round of 32; Dang Thi Linh lost to Justina Di Stasio (Canada) 1-10 in the round of 32 in the 76kg category. The 2023 World Championship takes place from September 16 to 24.

The Vietnamese wrestling team registered players for the 19th ASIAD including Nguyen Thi Xuan, Nguyen Thi My Trang, Tran Thi Anh, Nguyen Thi My Hanh, Lai Dieu Thuong, Dinh Thi Linh, Can Tat Du, Ngo Van Lam, Bui Tien Hai, Nghiem Dinh Hieu.
