The USGS said the earthquake occurred 16km northwest of Sagaing town, Myanmar, at a depth of 10km at around 12:50 local time this afternoon (March 28).

"We felt the earthquake for about a minute and then we ran out of the building. The earthquake was strong and sudden," a resident in Yangon, Myanmar, told CNN.

According to Bloomberg, the earthquake in Myanmar also caused far-reaching tremors, shaking buildings in Thailand and Vietnam .

Preliminary reports said that alarm bells rang in high-rise buildings in the Thai capital Bangkok at around 1:30 p.m. Residents and guests staying in apartment buildings and hotels in Bangkok ran into the streets in panic.

"I felt the ground shaking for about 10 seconds. I felt I couldn't stay in the house any longer so I ran out into the street," said a resident in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.

The quake was so strong that water was splashed in swimming pools in high-rise buildings. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

On Chinese social media, many people in Yunnan and Shaanxi said they also felt the tremors.

Earthquakes are relatively common in Myanmar, according to the USSG. Between 1930 and 1956, there were six earthquakes measuring 7.0 or higher near the Sagaing Fault, which runs north to south in Myanmar. In 2016, a 6.8-magnitude quake in the ancient capital of Bagan in central Myanmar killed three people and caused the towers at the tourist destination to collapse.
