Quang Nam Newspaper reported that at around 7:00 p.m. on November 1, 2022, pillar No. 2 of Song Vau Bridge at km0+500 on the DH1.DG route tilted upstream, causing the girder system of spans 2 and 3 to slide off the support stone. Immediately after the incident, a working group from Quang Nam province conducted a field inspection and determined that the cause was due to the narrowing of the bridge area, affected by floods and storms No. 4 and No. 5 in October 2022, with strong currents causing erosion of the bridge pier foundation, causing pillar T2 to tilt upstream. The bridge was severely damaged and was at risk of completely collapsing spans 2 and 3.
Song Vau Bridge was built in 1999 (invested by Quyet Thang Farm at that time), with low operating capacity and narrowing the flow. The damage could not be repaired to ensure transportation needs and socio -economic development, so it was necessary to rebuild. The above incident caused the travel of more than 2,000 people in Quyet Thang village (Ba commune) and all villages in Tu commune to the center of Ba commune and the center of Dong Giang district to be cut off.
To ensure the safety of people and vehicles, local authorities have barricaded and blocked the bridge. Temporary roads and temporary underground passages across the river have been built for cars, motorbikes, bicycles and pedestrians to temporarily travel during the dry season. On December 15, 2022, provincial leaders agreed on the policy of building a new bridge to replace the old one, with support for Dong Giang district to implement 90% of the total investment (but not exceeding 22.5 billion VND) from increased budget revenue.
Chairman of Dong Giang District People's Committee - Mr. A Vo To Phuong said that the construction of the design estimate and appraisal of the Song Vau bridge construction project had to go through many adjustments to be suitable. In the first quarter of 2024, the Provincial People's Committee approved the Song Vau bridge construction project.

After completing the required procedures, more than a month ago, Song Vau Bridge officially started construction. The project was awarded to a consortium of Ha Thanh Investment, Construction and Trade Joint Stock Company (located in Lien Chieu District, Da Nang City) and Chien Khanh Construction - Transport and Trade Services Company Limited (Ba Commune, Dong Giang District).
At the construction site, the contractor is demolishing the old bridge, which is almost complete. On the north bank, near pier M2, the workers are preparing the steel reinforcement of the bridge pier, ready to install and cast after completing the bored pile drilling. Technical staff of Ha Thanh Investment, Construction and Trade Joint Stock Company - engineer Dao Van Xuyen said that the contractor has prepared to drill bored piles. The project needs to drill a total of 18 piles to cast the foundation of the pier and bridge pier. If the weather is favorable, 1 pile will be drilled in 3 days.
Engineer Dao Van Xuyen added that the contractor is also urgently preparing the girder casting yard to start casting a total of 15 girder slabs. In about a week, workers will start casting the first girder slab. If there are no problems, this work will be completed in 2.5 months. According to the contract, the Song Vau bridge project will be completed in 1.5 years.
Director of the Dong Giang District Land Fund Development and Investment Project Management Board (investor) - Mr. Ho Hiep said that the unit responsible for compensation and site clearance of the project has now completed handing over the site for the contractor to start constructing the bridge, including the northern approach road. The investor will closely monitor and urge the progress and quality of implementation to complete the project on time to serve the trade of goods, travel, production, medical examination and treatment and study of the people of Ba commune, Tu commune and surrounding areas conveniently and safely.
Song Vau Bridge is 63.3m long; 11m wide (including 7.5m of roadway, 1.75m wide sidewalk on each side). The cross-section of the roadbed at both ends of the bridge is 6.5m wide (the road surface and reinforced sidewalk are 5.5m wide, each sidewalk is 0.5m wide). The total investment for the project is 25 billion VND from the provincial and district budgets for the period 2023 - 2025.
