Training points are the content that many students complain about because of the formality. Among the many criteria for adding and subtracting training points, there is the criterion for paying tuition fees. Paying tuition fees on time will be added or not added, but students who are late will have their points deducted heavily.
What does training have to do with tuition?
Tuition criteria are classified by universities as part of the content of "awareness of complying with school rules, regulations, and regulations".
It is worth mentioning that not all universities include this criterion in the training assessment content. Universities such as Ho Chi Minh City Economics , National Economics, Transport, Can Tho... do not have strict criteria on tuition fees when evaluating student training.
Regarding not including tuition fee criteria in training scores, Mr. Nguyen Van Duong - Head of Student Care and Support Department, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics - said that each student has different and dissimilar family economic conditions. Therefore, tuition fee is a sensitive issue, so the school does not include this criterion in evaluating student training.
Meanwhile, many universities apply this regulation to evaluate students' awareness. Among them, the University of Finance - Marketing and Ho Chi Minh City University of Education add 3 training points for students who pay tuition on time. These universities do not deduct points from students who pay late.
More strictly, many schools also deduct points from students who pay their tuition fees late. For example, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy stipulates that students who pay their tuition fees late will be given 0 points and will be handled according to student affairs regulations.
Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education deducts from 8 to 16 points for students who pay their tuition late, depending on the severity. Foreign Trade University deducts 10 points, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade deducts 5 points...
Circular 16/2015 of the Ministry of Education and Training on evaluating learners' training results only states basic contents, without specifying detailed criteria such as tuition fees.
Explaining the connection between tuition fees and training scores, Mr. Le Trung Dao - Vice Principal of the University of Finance and Marketing - said that it is a way to evaluate students' awareness of complying with regulations.
"The school issued notices about tuition fees and payment deadlines very long ago. However, many students did not comply. There were cases where the academic advisor called the parents and learned that they had already paid the tuition fees for their children. Students with difficulties who apply for an extension will still be considered as normal," said Mr. Dao.
Mr. Dao also added that previously the school's training score regulations were quite difficult, but with the new regulations, students only need to participate in normal activities to achieve an average training score.
Similarly, Mr. Tran Thanh Thuong - Head of Admissions and Student Affairs Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education - explained that from the beginning of the course, students were introduced to the school's regulations.
Deduction of training points for students who pay tuition late is to remind them to comply with regulations. For students in difficult circumstances, the school has a support fund.
Attendance for practice points

Training points are a headache for many students. A student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Law said that every time the school has an event, students have to line up from the yard up the stairs to the hall to check in. Some students run 10km to school just to check in to get training points, then find a way to leave early.
Similarly, another student wondered if anyone saw any real benefit in earning training points. If you do not earn 50 training points for 2 consecutive semesters, you will be given a level 2 warning (you will only be allowed to take 8 credits in the next semester).
"To me, training points are meaningless. Some events to earn training points like "civic activities" just require turning on the screen and going to sleep. Students fill out surveys without reading, which shows the meaninglessness of training points" - this student said.
Meanwhile, many students believe that whether it is beneficial or not depends on each person's mindset. If you participate just to get practice points, you will find it useless. If you participate with the mindset of learning new and good things from others, it will be beneficial. Participating in activities is also a form of learning, not just knowledge from books.
Students struggle to earn training points not only to avoid being warned or restricted from registering for courses but also for scholarships. Training points are one of the necessary and sufficient criteria when considering scholarships to encourage learning at schools.
Mr. Nguyen Van Duong said that because it is a scholarship to encourage learning, the academic results will be considered first and from highest to lowest until the scholarship is exhausted. In case many students have the same academic score, the one with the higher training score will be considered.
Good at studying but lack of skills
Regarding the formality or usefulness of evaluating student training points, Mr. Tran Thanh Thuong said that if the school organizes events but does not do them well, it will lead to a situation where students go just to get training points without focusing on the content and learning new and good things.
At Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, after each skill training activity, there is a survey of student opinions to overcome limitations and supplement the content students need for the next time.
"If students find it really suitable and useful, they will actively participate, interact, and enthusiastically learn. In reality, there are many students who study very well but do not have the skills to meet the requirements of businesses," said Mr. Thuong.
