Japanese people are opting for shorter, cheaper and closer overseas trips during this year's Golden Week holiday to save money amid a weakening yen to a 34-year low and higher inflation overseas, according to budget travel company HIS.

The average cost of an overseas trip fell 1.5 percent from Golden Week 2023 to 204,900 yen (about $1,300), while the average number of days spent traveling fell by one day to an average of six days, the company said.

Budget breaks to nearby destinations in Asia have become popular, with Seoul, South Korea, topping the list of most popular travel destinations, the company said.

However, the number of overseas travel reservations during this holiday by Japanese people increased 23.2% compared to the same period last year as this is the first Golden Week holiday not affected by travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

People can get up to 10 days off during this time this year (from late April to early May) if they choose to take leave on three non-public days.

According to the company, despite the lifting of travel restrictions due to the pandemic, the number of overseas travel bookings during this year's Golden Week holiday is still 46.7% lower than the same period in 2018./.
