Cruising on Ham Thuan Lake

Việt NamViệt Nam11/03/2024

One weekend in the spring of the Year of the Dragon (2014), we traveled along National Highway 55 to the Da Mi area (Ham Thuan Bac district). This is the only locality that possesses two fairly large artificial lakes, created after the Ham Thuan - Da Mi hydroelectric project was completed: Ham Thuan Lake with a surface area of nearly 2,500 hectares and Da Mi Lake covering more than 700 hectares.

Da Mi Lake is merely a reservoir without a flowing stream, so its surface remains calm year-round. The lake is nestled amidst vast, dense forests of ancient trees interspersed with green rocky mountains. From above, looking down at Ham Thuan Lake, Da Mi Lake resembles a watercolor painting. The emerald green water is dotted with small, yellowish-brown islets, and occasionally, boats carrying tourists stop at these small islands to rest and admire the picturesque natural scenery.

On a spring day, the romantic, peaceful, and cool atmosphere of Ham Thuan - Da Mi makes us forget the hardships and worries of daily life, returning to the exquisite beauty of nature. We feel the space filled with the sound of birds singing in the ancient forest or sturgeon swimming on the calm surface of the lake. Mr. Nguyen Van An, a local resident of Da Mi commune, guided us on a tour of the lake and then stopped at a verdant islet to rest. He said: “Da Mi has many beautiful scenic spots. There are many small islands on the lake, surrounded by lush green forests. Further away are the pristine, majestic waterfalls that always attract the curiosity and desire to explore of tourists… The scenery on Ham Thuan Lake is like a miniature Ha Long Bay. Tourists coming to Da Mi not only admire the lake amidst the rolling mountains but also enjoy famous specialties such as: sturgeon hotpot, grilled catfish (eaten while still hot), crispy fried or mango-marinated needlefish, free-range chicken boiled with lime leaves or grilled – all incredibly delicious…”
