"The child will grow up..."

Việt NamViệt Nam27/07/2024

After much anticipation, Phan Chu Trinh pedestrian street and Lam Son Square cultural space ( Thanh Hoa City) have officially opened. Many people were delighted in the first few days of the opening..., then eagerly awaited the opening again.

They said they had taken relaxing walks and enjoyed the scenery on pedestrian streets in many provinces and cities across the country, and that there were many attractive and appealing things there.

Then they wished that on Phan Chu Trinh pedestrian street and this supporting cultural space, there were corners for clay figurine makers, calligraphy demonstrations, traditional Vietnamese folk singing (ca trù), portrait sketching, or small stages for violinists, saxophone players, flute players, or two-stringed fiddle players, or kiosks selling rare cultural items...

In general, pedestrian streets should have more community spaces, street art corners where pedestrians can enjoy and participate in games and performances. Initially, the city can provide support, and gradually these art activities can become self-organized and financially managed under the city's supervision.

The public's desire to emulate the practices of older pedestrian streets is understandable. However, we must also understand and share the fact that when developing pedestrian street projects, each locality will have a different approach to suit its physical space, mechanical layout, and cultural life. Pedestrian streets cannot be a carbon copy; one locality cannot simply replicate another. It's similar to building new rural areas; there are common standards, but they must respect and promote the cultural values and unique characteristics of each village, rather than dressing all villages in the same uniform.

The approach to developing pedestrian and cultural spaces in urban areas therefore needs to be different, as a unique tourism product to attract visitors. This is understandable and requires patience and understanding. The Phan Chu Trinh pedestrian street and the Lam Son Square cultural space, after one month of operation, are like a child in the process of developing physically and absorbing and shaping its character. The suggestions and aspirations of the people are legitimate, but they need more time. This pedestrian and cultural space will grow over time like a beautiful and charming adult.

However, the speed of the pedestrian street's "growth" depends on many factors, including the need for fair praise and criticism, and responsible collaboration from residents and tourists. And of course, the listening, acceptance, and adjustment of those responsible for managing and developing this cultural space are also crucial. Feedback isn't always easy to hear, but it's an important channel for receiving input so that institutions that have received significant investment become increasingly suitable for their target audience.
