Cao Lanh City Book Street contributes to building a reading culture

DTO - Cao Lanh City Book Street (abbreviated as Book Street) is located in the area of Van Mieu Park - next to Van Thanh Mieu Cultural Relic - Ward 1, Cao Lanh City) is an open cultural space to organize activities, to create habits and promote knowledge, reading culture, especially to meet the spiritual and cultural needs of people inside and outside the locality.


Students visit, learn and read books at Cao Lanh City Book Street

In August 2022, Cao Lanh City People's Committee coordinated with Saigon Central Sea Star Joint Stock Company - located in District 5, Ho Chi Minh City to develop a plan to implement investment, operation and put into operation the Book Street in about 2 months (September 21, 2022 - November 19, 2022). The Book Street is designed and arranged according to each cultural space, rich and diverse; in harmony with the landscape, green space and architecture of the Temple of Literature with surrounding areas. The book stalls are made of glass panels to focus on highlighting the books, ensuring aesthetics, modernity, civilization and friendliness. The total construction area is about 600m2 including the following stalls: book stalls; cultural products and souvenir stalls; Book Coffee stalls; Executive Board Office; Square stage used to organize book fairs, major events of the province, city and the Book Street.

Cao Lanh City People's Committee coordinated with Vietnam Publishing Association to organize many rounds of inviting publishers and book distribution companies to survey the actual location of the project as well as give comments on booth designs to suit the needs of the units. At the same time, units such as: Tre Publishing House, Kim Dong Publishing House, Phuong Nam Culture Joint Stock Company, Anh Minh Import-Export Production and Trading Service Company Limited... were invited to participate in activities at Book Street. Thereby, the booths organized personnel, arranged book locations according to each topic with a more scientific search method, added more books, topics and more abundant quantities, meeting the learning needs of people in and outside the province. In particular, maintaining security and order, environmental sanitation was ensured as well as arranging personnel throughout the operation to promptly record comments and coordinate with the booths to adjust and promptly handle arising issues.

Ms. Le Thi Mai Trinh - Vice Chairman of Cao Lanh City People's Committee, said: "From the time the idea of a Book Street was formed until it was officially put into operation, it has received a lot of attention and sharing from the media, news agencies, newspapers inside and outside the province, especially many supportive news and articles, creating a wide spread. At the same time, Cao Lanh City regularly and effectively propagates on publications of news agencies, newspapers, the city's electronic information page, social networking sites... about activities serving the needs of readers at the Book Street".

According to the Office of the Book Street Management Board, in order to meet the needs of spiritual culture in general and serve the needs of reading in particular, the Office of the Book Street Management Board has coordinated with the city's functional departments to actively contact and invite publishers, book distribution companies, and bookstores to participate in activities at the Book Street. Since its opening until now, the Office of the Book Street Management Board has coordinated with units inside and outside the province to organize dozens of activities, attracting nearly thousands of cadres, civil servants, public employees, union members, association members and people to attend. Specifically: author exchanges and the launch of the work "Chatting with water hyacinth" - writer Vo Dieu Thanh; exchange and launch of the work "Hong Ngu Folk Culture" - by 2 authors Ngo Tran Hau Nghe and Tran Thi Ngoc Ly; Seminar on "Improving reading culture" in Dong Thap province... Statistics show that the average number of visitors to shop at Book Street on weekdays is about 500 people, on weekends about 800 - 1,000 people, and on holidays and Tet, it attracts 3,000 people or more.

Book Street is the main venue for organizing the activities of the 2nd Dong Thap Province Book and Reading Culture Day in 2023 with the theme "Books for me, for you" with many rich and meaningful activities. Thereby, affirming the position, role and importance of books in improving knowledge, skills, developing thinking, educating and training personality; encouraging and developing the reading movement in the community, contributing to building a culture of Dong Thap people who are affectionate, dynamic and creative.

In order to operate the Book Street to meet the rich and diverse needs of readers, in the coming time, the Office of the Book Street Management Board will continue to coordinate with the city's functional departments to advise the Cao Lanh City People's Committee to develop support policies, creating more favorable conditions for publishing units and bookstores to organize activities to exchange authors, works, and introduce new books. Promote communication and introduction work through the application of many new forms, especially the effective application of 4.0 technology in the activities of the Book Street, ensuring good social order and safety and environmental sanitation work... to continue to attract a large number of people and tourists to the Book Street.
