Irwin is CEO Elon Musk’s right-hand man at the social media company. As head of Trust and Safety, Irwin helps Musk oversee the social media company’s policies on harassment, violence, and hate speech — rules that have been loosened since Musk took over the platform.
Current and former Twitter employees consider Irwin to be one of Musk's most trusted executives, always ready to carry out and defend the decisions made by the Tesla CEO.
Irwin is the second director of Trust and Safety to step down since Musk took over the company. The first was Yoel Roth, who left last November.
Irwin joined Twitter in June 2022, a few months before Musk's $44 billion acquisition of Bluebird was completed.
The loosening of censorship policies implemented by “Blue Bird” has upset advertisers and users, as they believe the platform has become more friendly to hateful content.
More and more advertisers have pulled out of Twitter since Elon Musk took over, concerned about the content their ads might appear next to. In March, Musk said the company’s ad revenue had dropped by 50%.
Meanwhile, Twitter’s market value has fallen to just 30% of its acquisition price, according to Fidelity. The company also has $13 billion in debt, and as of the end of March, less than 1% of its monthly users had signed up for its Twitter Blue subscription service.
