Steve Jobs' email changed iPhone history

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên09/12/2024

No one can deny that the late CEO Steve Jobs left a deep mark with his controversial personality and outstanding business talent. Among his decisions was a landmark decision, which was to open the iPhone platform to outside developers. This is considered a decision that helped change the history of the iPhone.

Important Email from Steve Jobs

An email exchange between Steve Jobs and Apple’s then-senior vice president of software engineering, Bertrand Serlet, marked the birth of the App Store. Prior to 2007, the iPhone was a closed device with a limited number of pre-installed apps and Apple’s value was only $150 billion. Steve Jobs had seen web apps as a way to extend the iPhone’s functionality, but this failed to meet the needs of users who wanted greater customization and a rich app ecosystem.

The iPhone wouldn't have been successful if Steve Jobs hadn't opened the iPhone platform to developers.

Pressure from users forced Steve Jobs to consider opening the iPhone platform to third-party developers. In an October 2007 email exchange with Serlet, Steve Jobs proposed the idea of developing a Software Development Kit (SDK) that would allow developers to create native applications for the iPhone. His response was short but powerful: "Of course, as long as we can show everything at Macworld on January 15, 2008." This statement not only set a deadline but also paved the way for a project that could change the direction of Apple and the mobile industry.

Finally, in March 2008, Apple announced the appearance of SDK and in July of the same year, the App Store officially launched. This event contributed significantly to Apple's growth, from a capitalization of 150 billion USD to the current 2,100 billion USD.

Opening the iPhone platform to third-party developers had a profound impact on the mobile ecosystem. The App Store enabled independent developers to create groundbreaking apps, which fueled the growth of the mobile app market and solidified Apple’s leadership in the industry. The App Store allowed Apple to diversify its products and services, strengthen its market position, and generate additional revenue from app sales and subscriptions.

Apple’s decision to open up the iPhone platform to third-party developers was not only a strategic move, it also changed the way we use mobile devices. While the company’s policies are now being criticized, the story of the App Store remains a historic moment that should not be forgotten.
