On June 12, 2021, the football world experienced a moment of anxiety when Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field in the first minutes of the match between Denmark and Finland in the group stage of EURO 2020.
The Danish midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest and medical staff rushed to the pitch to perform first aid. Eriksen regained consciousness a few minutes later before being taken to hospital.
During the time Eriksen was being treated, many tears were shed by his wife, family, relatives and football fans. Along with that were prayers.
Eriksen later regained consciousness and gradually returned to football. However, he had to have a defibrillator implanted. The problem was that the Italian Football Federation did not allow players with heart problems to play professionally, so Eriksen had to say goodbye to Inter Milan.
The 32-year-old midfielder returned to England, briefly joining Brentford and impressing before joining Manchester United in the summer of 2022. That same year, the former Tottenham midfielder revealed that he had “left this world for five minutes”.
Despite only playing a reserve role at Man United, Eriksen is still an important factor for the Danish team. He was named in the EURO 2024 list and started in the opening match against Slovenia on the evening of June 16 (Vietnam time).
Eriksen himself scored the opening goal against Slovenia in the 17th minute. That moment marked 1,100 days since he suffered a cardiac arrest.
Eriksen also received the Man of the Match award, although unfortunately the Danish team was equalized in the second half and only got 1 point.
