According to Foreign Affairs (FA), the war in Ukraine has reached a major turning point; the situation has changed significantly compared to a few years ago, and Russia may no longer hold a dominant position on the battlefield.

Following the failure of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' counteroffensive in 2023, Russia's Special Military Operations (SOM) entered a steady rhythm with summer and winter offensives. The intensity of the attacks gradually decreased.

Throughout 2024 and much of 2025, Russia recruited more soldiers than it lost, allowing the Russian Armed Forces to escalate attacks on Ukrainian units.

On the other hand, the Ukrainian army is suffering more losses than it can replace, and its defensive lines are becoming increasingly vulnerable with each passing month.

The article believes that this will lead to complacency in Russia, as Kremlin officials believe that even with a slow pace of advance, the Russian Army will eventually occupy all of Donbass.

This led to Russia's hardline stance in the US-led negotiations following Donald Trump's re-election.

Ultimately, if the negotiations fail, the Kremlin hopes to achieve its goals on the battlefield, but the reality has changed considerably compared to previous years.

As spring gave way to summer, bringing the ground to a firmer stage, Ukrainian soldiers in trenches along the front line once again felt the increasing intensity of Russian attacks and breakthrough attempts, but the mood of the Ukrainian commanders had changed.

Russian attacks are now putting less pressure on their units than in previous years, despite continuous drone strikes and artillery fire, and there is growing confidence in Kyiv that Ukraine will be able to force Russia to agree to a ceasefire.

Author Jack Watling argues that the shift in sentiment in Ukraine is not due to a radical change in war tactics, but rather to the gradual development of several trends which, when combined, indicate a significant change in the course of the conflict.

The author emphasizes that the Ukrainian Armed Forces, despite heavy losses in previous years, are now much more ready for combat and are capable of repelling Russian attacks and forcing Russia to sign a peace agreement.
