Players have repeatedly protested against the tight schedule of the FIFA Club World Cup. |
FIFPRO general secretary Alex Phillips said many of the 66,000 male and female players represented by the organisation were concerned about lack of rest and the high number of matches they were required to play.
She stressed that players also fear retaliation if they speak out publicly on the issue: "Players are very cautious about speaking out because they have no power. There are top stars who have wealth, power and a voice, but that's only 1% of them. The other 99% of players have no voice, unless it's through their union or association."
FIFPRO has long been a vocal critic of FIFA's expansion of the Club World Cup, which has increased the number of matches, leaving many top players exhausted. "Before the FIFA Club World Cup, I spoke to some of the top stars, and they said they had not had a rest for a long time," Phillips revealed.
The FIFPRO general secretary also said that some players only get time off when they are injured. Others were frustrated and skeptical about speaking out. But just two weeks later, these same players were making videos on social media saying that the FIFA Club World Cup was a great idea.
According to Express , FIFPRO and several European leagues will file a legal complaint against FIFA with the European Commission in the near future. The group, which includes the Premier League, believes that the governing body FIFA abuses its position to expand tournaments, exhausting players.
