Coach Hansi Flick is worried about his squad |
Despite successfully loaning Marcus Rashford from Manchester United, Barcelona still have to strictly adhere to La Liga's wage cap before the English striker is eligible to play. This situation is not unique to Rashford.
Hoping to ease some of the problems, Barca could take advantage of the long-term injury of captain Marc-André ter Stegen. According to the regulations, they are freed up 80% of the German goalkeeper's salary to register new players during his absence.
The Catalans used this method to sign Dani Olmo last summer after Andreas Christensen was injured, and are now prioritising goalkeeper Joan Garcia in the same way. This means Rashford is likely to have to wait until after Garcia, as the goalkeeper position is a priority.
Coach Hansi Flick admitted that this was a difficult problem before the opening match against Mallorca in the early morning of August 17: "I am not satisfied, but I understand the situation and believe that the club will handle it. We focus on what we can control, and let the club take care of the rest."
Despite being uncertain for the first round, Rashford and Garcia both featured in pre-season, notably in the Joan Gamper Trophy when Rashford assisted Raphinha in a 5-0 win over Como.
Under the loan deal, Barcelona will pay Rashford's entire salary this season, saving MU around £12.75 million. The Spanish team also includes a buyout clause next summer.
