Nearly 4,000 billion VND poured into Tri An hydropower plant expansion project

With an investment of nearly VND4,000 billion, Tri An Hydropower Plant will be expanded, helping to increase capacity, maximize flow and reduce CO2 emissions.

Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) has just been approved by the People's Committee of Dong Nai province to lease more than 20 hectares of land in Tri An commune to implement the Tri An Hydropower Plant expansion project, expected to start construction on August 19.

This is one of 8 key projects that Dong Nai province is implementing, inaugurating and breaking ground in this period.

Accordingly, EVN is the investor, and the Power Project Management Board 3 (EVNPMB3) directly manages the project. The project includes 2 units with an installed capacity of 200 MW (each unit has 100 MW), with a total investment of VND 3,965 billion. Unit 1 is expected to operate in the third quarter of 2027, and Unit 2 in the fourth quarter of 2027.

At the end of 2024, EVN started construction of Hieu Liem Bridge, an infrastructure item serving the transportation of equipment and materials for the project. When completed, the bridge will not only serve hydropower but also be a new traffic route, creating a driving force for socio -economic connectivity for the region.

According to EVN, when completed, the project will increase the ability to mobilize capacity for the Southern load, especially during peak hours, contributing to improving the operation of the national power system. The expansion also helps reduce production costs, maximize flow, limit excess discharge, reduce CO2 emissions and extend equipment life.

Tri An Hydropower Plant began construction in 1984 with the support of the Soviet Union. Unit 1 was connected to the national grid on April 30, 1988 and the entire project was officially inaugurated in 1991. Currently, the plant has 4 units with a total designed capacity of 400 MW, with an average output of about 1.7 billion kWh/year.

In addition, Tri An Lake also ensures the supply of domestic water, serves agriculture , repels salinity and regulates floods for downstream areas.
