Comments and evaluation of coffee prices today, July 22
Coffee markets are seeing mixed results in major producing countries. In Indonesia, unusually rainy weather has significantly affected the drying of robusta coffee, while trading activity in Vietnam remains low due to limited supply and weak demand.
According to traders, Indonesia’s Liwa district, West Lampung, is facing heavy rains during the main harvest season. This not only causes coffee beans to fall early but also significantly hinders drying, directly affecting quality and output. A local farmer estimated that this year’s output could be 10-20% lower than last year and that the harvest season is expected to last until August. This situation has caused Sumatran coffee to be offered at a premium to futures contracts on the London exchange, indicating local supply pressure.
In Vietnam, the domestic coffee market has also been lackluster. Although coffee prices in the Central Highlands have recovered slightly over the past week, reaching VND93,500-94,000/kg, up from the previous week, trading activity remains sluggish. Traders say Vietnamese farmers are in no rush to sell, with many even looking to buy coffee from Indonesia to make up for supply. Vietnam’s grade 2 robusta coffee is being offered at a premium of $130-$160 per tonne over the September LIFFE contract.
Predicting future coffee price trends
Given the current factors, the global coffee market may continue to face volatility in the near term. Weather issues in Indonesia could cause localized shocks to robusta supplies, while supply constraints in Vietnam are also a factor to watch. However, a slight recovery in global coffee prices following a trade deal between the US and Indonesia could provide a glimmer of hope for the market.
In the short term, robusta prices may be under pressure from new supplies from Indonesia, although quality may be affected by rains. For arabica, macro factors and inventory levels will continue to shape the trend. Farmers holding onto stocks in Vietnam indicate expectations of higher prices, which could support domestic prices if demand picks up again. However, the overall market direction will depend on the balance between global supply and demand, as well as weather factors and trade policies.
