In about three months, farmers in the Central Highlands, including Dak Nong, will begin harvesting coffee. Due to fluctuations in coffee prices, businesses and cooperatives are worried about the lack of clean coffee supply.
Mr. Vo Dinh Danh, Director of Dak Mil Agricultural and Forestry Cooperative, said that coffee prices have increased dramatically since the 2023-2024 crop year, making it difficult to purchase fresh coffee. The cooperative needs fresh coffee that meets standards such as 4C and organic to produce specialty coffee, and wants to buy coffee with at least 80-100% ripe fruit.
However, last season, the rate of ripe coffee was only 60-70% because farmers picked early for fear of theft, making it difficult for the cooperative to buy quality raw materials. Mr. Danh expressed concern that farmers might continue to pick unripe coffee next season and the cooperative aims to buy 100 tons of clean coffee beans.
Businesses are concerned that the price difference between regular and clean coffee could make it difficult to purchase and sell. Harvesting unripe coffee could reduce clean coffee output and affect the reputation of Vietnamese coffee in the long term.
Mr. Danh and the cooperative are encouraging farmers not to pick unripe coffee and are working with local authorities to protect coffee plantations, ensuring a high rate of ripe fruit.
