Japanese rubber futures continued to weaken during the trading session, pressured by a stronger yen and a prolonged price war in China’s auto industry. Meanwhile, some Vietnamese rubber companies adjusted their prices higher.
World rubber price
At the end of this morning's trading session, the price of August rubber futures on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) - China decreased by 2.4% (375 yuan) to 14,940 yuan/ton.
In Thailand, rubber futures for August delivery remained flat at 73.37 baht/kg.
On the Osaka Exchange (OSE) - Japan, rubber price decreased by 3.6% (12.1 Yen) to 319.9 Yen/kg.
On the Singapore Exchange (SICOM), the rubber contract for August delivery closed at 168.5 US cents/kg, down 1.1%.
Many Chinese automakers and dealers are inflating sales figures to boost their market image amid a prolonged price war, a new Reuters analysis shows. This practice masks real inventory levels, which can lead manufacturers to misjudge demand and overproduce. This, combined with lower car prices due to fierce competition, continues to push down rubber and tire prices.
In addition, the Japanese yen rose to 148.22 per dollar during the day, making yen-denominated assets more expensive for foreign investors, further weakening the attractiveness of the Japanese rubber market.
However, the weather situation in Thailand - the world's largest rubber producer - is also being closely monitored, with the country's Meteorological Department warning of heavy rain on July 29, which could affect supplies.
Meanwhile, Thailand and Cambodia reached a ceasefire agreement on July 28 after five days of intense fighting. However, Thailand later accused Cambodian forces of violating the agreement with many new attacks.
On the Singapore Exchange (SICOM), the rubber contract for August delivery closed at 168.5 US cents/kg, down 1.1%.
In Europe, the German rubber industry remains structurally challenged, although the order trend in the first half of 2025 shows signs of improvement. According to the mid-year economic survey of the German Rubber Industry Association (WDK), the increase in orders is the first positive sign after a long period of gloom.
But domestic output has not benefited as much, said Michael Berthel, chief economist at WDK, pointing to the remaining burdens: high energy costs, a bloated bureaucracy and high labor costs – factors that have made Germany less competitive in industry, especially for companies with global operations.
Although 2025 revenue is expected to be higher than last year thanks to orders, domestic demand remains weak and is forecast to decline by 1%. Berthel warned that more and more companies are being forced to move production outside Germany to reduce costs.
On the policy front, only 27% of surveyed companies believe that the government ’s “investment promotion” program will have a positive impact on their business. WDK President Michael Klein called for urgent action to support small and medium-sized enterprises, which are the backbone of the German economy. Without substantial change, he warned, “The German rubber industry – a key sector – could disappear in the near future.”
