Black Thorn durian grown in the West is retailing for VND800,000 per kilogram - the most expensive in Vietnam.

Black Thorn - also known as black thorn durian, is a famous durian variety from Malaysia - when imported to Vietnam, most of the durian is frozen. In recent years, this variety has been propagated by households in the West and is now bearing fruit.

VnExpress 's observations at fruit stores in Ho Chi Minh City show that the number of establishments selling this type is not much, most of them are frozen products from Malaysia. The price of Vietnamese Black Thorn is also 9 times higher than Ri 6 and 2.5 times higher than Musang King.

Despite its high price, this fruit is very popular. Ms. Loan in District 5 said she just ordered three Black Thorn fruits at a price of VND800,000 per kilogram. The three fruits weighed 7 kilograms, so she had to pay VND5.6 million. "This type has thin skin, big segments, and chewy flesh that is very delicious," Ms. Loan said.

Sharing the same feeling, Ms. Lan in Hanoi said that the segments of Vietnamese Black Thorn durian are not as deep orange-yellow as Malaysian durian, but the fat and sweetness are stable. "I had to wait a week to buy two fruits," she said.

According to fruit shop owners, Black Thorn Vietnam is still in trial production so the yield is still low. Each garden can only supply about 50-100 kg at a time, so it is not enough to meet customer demand.

As the first person to test the Black Thorn variety, Mr. Thuc in Ben Tre said that his joint area currently has about 15-20 trees. He and his friends have been testing their variety since 2019. Last year, this tree produced 30 kg of fruit per tree. This is the second year and the yield has doubled, the segments are not as wormy or hard as Musang King.

"I'm about to cut 200 kg but it's still not enough to deliver to customers. They are suitable for the climate in the West, so we will expand the area soon," said Mr. Thuc. In his garden, Black Thorn has a wholesale price of 450-500,000 VND per kg, the highest among durian varieties grown in Vietnam.

In Can Tho, some gardeners are also experimenting with growing this variety on a small scale. Mr. Dang Manh Khuong, a durian dealer here, said that this year, only a few gardeners are harvesting, so the supply is low. Therefore, he spends most of it on retail sales, not wholesale like other varieties.

According to Mr. Khuong, this variety grown in Vietnam is producing better quality fruit than Musang King. Each Black Thorn fruit usually weighs from 1.5-3 kg, with about 4-5 segments.

Western gardeners say that Black Thorn grows faster than Ri 6 and some other varieties. The plant bears its first fruit after 2-3 years of planting. This variety can be harvested after about 150 days.

The characteristic of this type of durian is that it can be cut when it is old, or left to ripen naturally without being hard. Its skin is much thinner than other types, the thorns on the skin are small and dark in color, so many people also call it black thorn durian.
