Buying cheap piglets, losing a herd of more than 1 ton due to disease

A wrong decision to buy cheap piglets of unclear origin caused a pig farmer in Vinh Long to lose his entire pig farm, with losses of up to hundreds of millions of dong. This is a valuable lesson about the potential risks of being greedy for cheapness and lacking vigilance.

With the desire to develop the economy, Ms. Phan Van Tu Em (My Thuan commune, Vinh Long province) borrowed 50 million VND to invest in 27 breeding pigs, raising them in herds. Before that, she boldly spent 200 million VND to build spacious barns. Her total herd of pigs is up to 29.

The breed of pig was introduced by an acquaintance, who promised that the pig was beautiful, healthy, fully vaccinated and, importantly, priced 200,000 - 300,000 VND/pig cheaper than the market. Trusting the seller, Mrs. Em was happy because she thought she had saved a large amount of money.

In the early days, the pigs grew very well, ate well and gained weight quickly. However, after 18 days, some of them suddenly stopped eating, coughed and showed signs of weakness. Ms. Em contacted the seller for support but then could not call anymore.

On July 16, local veterinary officials took samples for testing and the results were positive for African swine fever. Immediately, all 29 pigs, weighing more than 1 ton, were forced to be destroyed on July 17.

The shock not only cost Mrs. Em the money she had borrowed, but also ruined her entire business plan. While the newly built barn was intact, it was now empty. She hoped to receive support from the government so she could rebuild from scratch.
