Choosing the wrong breed, losing the whole pig farm
According to the Agriculture and Environment newspaper, buying cheap piglets carrying diseases left many farmers penniless because they had to destroy the entire herd when the disease broke out.
In the newly built barn that still smelled of lime and disinfectant, Mrs. Phan Van Tu Em (Tan Thuan Hamlet, My Thuan Commune) sadly looked at the empty barn, because the entire herd of pigs had just been destroyed. She said that at first, she only bought two local piglets to practice raising. Seeing that she was "lucky", she borrowed 50 million VND to buy 27 more pigs, hoping to raise them for sale during Tet.
The piglets were introduced to Mrs. Em by an acquaintance who said they were beautiful, disease-free, fully vaccinated, and about 200,000-300,000 VND cheaper than the market price each. “They said it was a long-standing reputable place. I was very happy to hear that, thinking I could save tens of millions,” Mrs. Em confided.
In the early days, the pigs ate well and grew quickly. Some weighed only 20 kilos, but after less than half a month, they grew to more than 30 kilos. But on the 18th day, some of them stopped eating, coughed, became lethargic, and then died. She called the seller who promised to send the medicine via shipper, but then the phone number became unreachable.
On July 16, after reporting to the local authorities, veterinary staff took samples for testing. The results were positive for African swine fever. On the afternoon of July 17, Ms. Em’s entire herd of 29 pigs (weighing more than 1 ton) had to be destroyed.
“Just one litter of sick pigs is enough to lose 50 million VND borrowed. I also just invested 200 million VND to build a barn, it would be a pity to give it up now. I hope the government will support me with a loan to rebuild,” Ms. Em lamented.
