African Swine Fever in Quang Tri: 103 tons of pigs destroyed within 1 month

As of July 13, African swine fever has appeared in 43 villages in 11 communes of Quang Tri province, including Kim Phu, Tan Thanh, Dong Le, Tan Gianh, Quang Trach, Phong Nha, Tuyen Lam, Tuyen Son, Trung Thuan, Hoa Trach and Con Tien. In total, 1,801 infected pigs have been destroyed, with a total weight of nearly 103 tons. Currently, the outbreak in Kim Phu commune has passed 21 days, while 10 other outbreaks are still under monitoring.
Deputy Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Quang Tri Province, Mr. Duong Viet Phuong Tuan, said that the outbreak was strong and spread rapidly due to unfavorable weather, prolonged hot weather interspersed with thunderstorms, creating favorable conditions for pathogens to develop. In addition, factors such as loose control of breeding animals and vehicles entering and leaving livestock facilities, low vaccination rates, along with farmers delaying reporting when pigs suspected of being infected with the disease, have increased the risk of widespread disease spread.
To control the epidemic, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine has coordinated with local authorities to implement disease prevention and control measures according to regulations. Activities include taking samples for testing to determine the cause, providing instructions for destroying sick pigs, reviewing the total pig herd, disinfecting the environment, and strengthening monitoring and inspection at slaughterhouses and pork sales points. The Department also provided more than 1,420 liters of VIA-IODINE solution to support disinfection in epidemic and high-risk areas, and sent disease surveillance officers to each village to detect and promptly handle new outbreaks.
Faced with the complicated developments of the epidemic, the People's Committee of Quang Tri province issued telegram No. 01, requesting departments, branches and localities to synchronously and drastically implement measures to prevent and control African swine fever. People's Committees of communes and wards are required to closely monitor the epidemic situation, develop timely response plans, and declare the epidemic and end the epidemic within their authority. At the same time, localities need to step up propaganda about the level of danger, risk of spread and measures to prevent and control the epidemic to raise people's awareness and limit damage.
