Pigs infected with African swine fever and PRRS were detected in Bac Lieu during an illegal transportation case.

On June 18, the Department of Animal Health of Region VII (Can Tho) announced the results of testing pig samples taken by the authorities of Bac Lieu province from Vinh Phu Tay commune, Phuoc Long district. The results showed that viscera samples from the herd of pigs owned by Mr. Vo Trung Kien (born in 1999, residing in Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City) were positive for African swine fever virus (ASFV) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) North American strain.

Earlier, in the early morning of June 14, the inspection team of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Bac Lieu province coordinated with the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Station of Phuoc Long district to inspect the truck with license plate 94H-004.27 in Phuoc 2 hamlet, Vinh Phu Tay commune. Here, they discovered that the truck was transporting 120 pigs without valid quarantine certificates. Mr. Kien confessed that he had transported the pigs from Can Tho to Bac Lieu for consumption.

The entire herd of pigs was temporarily detained for testing and monitoring for 7 days. With the positive results for two serious infectious diseases, Bac Lieu provincial authorities will destroy all 120 pigs to prevent the spread of the disease. At the same time, Mr. Kien will be administratively punished and forced to pledge not to re-offend.

The Inspectorate of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Bac Lieu province will continue to coordinate with relevant agencies to handle the case according to the provisions of law.
