Risk of African swine fever recurrence due to adverse weather
According to information from the Agriculture and Environment newspaper, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Khanh Hoa province has warned about the complicated situation of livestock and poultry diseases nationwide. Since the beginning of the year, the country has recorded 197 outbreaks of African swine fever in 34 provinces and cities, with a total of 7,850 pigs infected, dead and destroyed.
In Khanh Hoa, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine reported an outbreak in Dien Tan Commune (Dien Khanh District). Authorities quickly implemented measures to destroy and spray disinfectants, thanks to which the epidemic was controlled and no new cases occurred.
However, Mr. Huynh Kim Khanh, Head of the provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, said that the risk of an outbreak of African swine fever in the near future is very high. Unpredictable weather can reduce the resistance of livestock, creating conditions for pathogens to develop and spread.
In addition, in the context of the province organizing many festivals to attract tourists, the demand for trading, transporting and consuming animals also increases. However, the livestock farming conditions of many farming households are still limited, along with the situation of small-scale slaughter at facilities that are not allowed to operate without control, further increasing the risk of disease.
