Tuyen Quang livestock farming stands firm against the "storm" of African swine fever
Tuyen Quang – Although African swine fever (ASF) has caused severe damage to the livestock industry, some facilities have shown incredible resilience, becoming bright spots in disease safety. This is the assessment of Mr. Trinh Van Binh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tuyen Quang, in an exclusive interview with the Agriculture and Environment newspaper.
According to data updated as of August 19, more than 74,200 pigs have been culled in 114 communes across the province, accounting for nearly 5% of the total herd. The total weight of infected pigs has reached more than 3,900 tons. The pathogen spreads rapidly, especially in communes with large herds, causing many households to fall into difficulties. The complicated weather situation further increases the risk of widespread outbreaks.
The main cause of this situation is the small-scale, scattered farming method, which makes it difficult to control the epidemic. Many households have not followed the correct environmental sanitation procedures, discharging waste directly into the environment without treatment. Some households have even thrown dead pigs into the environment, creating conditions for the epidemic to spread strongly. The transportation and trade of pigs are not strictly controlled, which also increases the risk of epidemics.
Meanwhile, large farms and corporations such as CJ Vina Agri, Dabaco, Mavin, and CP Vietnam have strictly applied biosafety principles. Thanks to that, these units have maintained stable operations and have not recorded any cases of infection. This shows the important role of applying science and technology in disease prevention.
However, slaughter control remains limited, largely due to the prevalence of small-scale slaughtering. Coupled with the high resistance and long-term survival of the ASF virus in the environment, disease prevention and control is facing many major challenges.
