Northern pig prices fall freely
The Northern live hog market was suddenly shaken by the biggest price drop in months. Phu Tho led the decline when it suddenly lost 2,000 VND/kg, pushing the price down to only 57,000 VND/kg. This is a record low price in the region, causing many people to worry.
Not only Phu Tho, many other provinces and cities are also not immune to the downward trend. Tuyen Quang, Bac Ninh and Hai Phong all reduced by 1,000 VND/kg, bringing the price to 58,000 VND/kg. Similarly, in Cao Bang and Thai Nguyen, the price of pork also decreased by 1,000 VND/kg, down to 57,000 VND/kg.
Even the rugged Northwest region was not spared. Lai Chau, Dien Bien and Son La all dropped by VND1,000/kg, pushing prices down to VND56,000/kg.
However, amid the price drop, a few "bright spots" still maintain their positions. Quang Ninh, Ninh Binh and Hung Yen firmly maintain the price of 58,000 VND/kg. Lang Son and Lao Cai are also stable at 57,000 VND/kg. Currently, the price of live pigs in the whole North is fluctuating from 56,000 to 58,000 VND/kg.

African swine fever puts great pressure on the livestock industry
According to the Agriculture and Environment newspaper, African swine fever initially appeared in small-scale farms with a few pigs, but recently it has broken out strongly, with more than 21,000 pigs infected.
In Nghe An, the epidemic is becoming more and more complicated and unpredictable. From small-scale farms (1-5 pigs), the epidemic has spread to large farms, causing the number of sick and culled pigs to increase dramatically.
Faced with this situation, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine coordinated with the Department of Agriculture and Environment to propose urgent response measures to the People's Committee of Nghe An province. Many dispatches have been issued, including dispatch No. 09/CD-UBND (April 18, 2025), urgent dispatch No. 20/CD-UBND (July 15, 2025) and No. 23/CD-UBND (July 21, 2025).
The seriousness of the epidemic is demonstrated through provincial conferences and online meetings with working groups and commune-level People's Committees to guide, direct and promote epidemic prevention and control work.
To support the livestock industry, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has assigned the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center to issue a decision and assign staff to directly support communes/wards, contributing to reducing pressure on localities in the context of complicated disease developments.
