African swine fever ravages Tuyen Quang: Thousands of pigs destroyed, farmers in dire straits
On July 26 and 27, Tuyen Quang province culled 3,765 pigs with a total weight of more than 207 tons in 14 communes, accounting for nearly a quarter of the total number of pigs culled since the beginning of the African swine fever outbreak. Key communes such as Son Thuy, Phu Luong, and Truong Sinh recorded hundreds of pigs being culled every day, pushing people into dire straits.
Mr. Le Van Toi's family (village 5, Nhu Khe commune) is suffering heavy losses when his herd of nearly 300 pigs is attacked by the disease. Despite sprinkling lime, disinfecting and isolating the barn, the virus still penetrates, causing healthy pigs to lose appetite, become tired and test positive for the disease. About 10 tons of pigs, equivalent to nearly half a billion VND, have been buried according to the process. The remaining pigsty is the family's last hope, but the risk of the disease spreading is still present.
Despite his grief, Mr. Toi still cooperated with the authorities and veterinary forces to handle the situation promptly and prevent the spread of the disease. “We have to think about the whole community, not just our own family,” he shared.
Tuyen Quang province has set up 23 temporary quarantine checkpoints in communes such as Yen Minh, Khau Vai, Son Thuy, and Tan My, strictly controlling the transportation of pigs and pig products, and disinfecting all vehicles entering and leaving the epidemic area.
