News, forecast of live pig price on May 9, 2025: Live pig market in Vietnam is under a lot of pressure
The Vietnamese pig market is under pressure from reduced supply and rising farming costs, especially in the Mekong Delta and Dong Nai. Today’s pig prices range from VND67,000 to VND75,000 per kilogram, with the North recording a slight increase, while Dong Nai reported a decrease in pig herds, raising concerns about future supply.
In the Mekong Delta, the total pig herd reached about 1.9 million, down 5% year-on-year, mainly due to rising feed costs and diseases such as African swine fever, which led to the culling of more than 1,300 pigs. The livestock industry here accounts for 61% of agricultural value, but people are facing pressure from farm relocation to ensure environmental protection. Today's live pig prices in this region ranged from 73,000 to 75,000 VND/kg, with Long An leading (75,000 VND/kg, up 2,000 VND/kg) and Ca Mau increasing slightly by 1,000 VND/kg to 74,000 VND/kg. Provinces such as Dong Thap, An Giang, and Kien Giang maintained prices at 73,000 VND/kg, reflecting a temporarily stable supply.
In Dong Nai, the Statistics Office reported a pig herd of 2.04 million, down 2.82% year-on-year due to planning of farming areas and the trend of early selling when the price of live pigs reached a profitable level today. The average price in April here was 72,000 VND/kg, but is currently maintained at 73,000 VND/kg, unchanged. Mr. Nguyen Van Toan, a livestock expert in Dong Nai, said: "High prices stimulate selling, but the decrease in the total herd can push prices up in the future if demand recovers strongly."
In the North, the price of live pigs today, May 9, 2025, fluctuated from 67,000 to 68,000 VND/kg, with Bac Giang, Hung Yen, Thai Binh, and Tuyen Quang leading the way (68,000 VND/kg, up 1,000-2,000 VND/kg). Ha Nam and Ninh Binh increased by 1,000 VND/kg to 67,000 VND/kg, while Yen Bai and Lao Cai remained unchanged. The slight upward trend reflects improved domestic consumption demand.
The livestock industry is facing challenges from feed costs, diseases, and the need to manage the herd. Solutions such as traceability, online declaration, and the use of management software are proposed to improve the efficiency of the supply chain. According to experts, the application of technology and disease control will help reduce market pressure.
