African swine fever outbreak in Phu Tho

According to VNA, from July 1 to 11, Phu Tho province recorded African swine fever in 27 villages and 128 households in 11 communes including Yen Thuy, Yen Tri, Cao Son, Mai Chau, Pa Co, Kim Boi, Hop Kim, Cao Duong, Thung Nai, Tien Phong, and Lac Son. The total number of sick and dead pigs that had to be destroyed was 538, equivalent to about 34,526 kg. Up to now, there are still 8 outbreaks that have not passed 21 days.

According to the assessment of the Department of Livestock, Veterinary and Fisheries of Phu Tho province, the African swine fever virus is still present in localities, especially in small-scale livestock farms that do not ensure hygiene conditions, causing a high risk of spreading.

Based on that reality, the Department has established a specialized working group to inspect and verify the epidemic situation; at the same time, it supports and guides on on-site disease treatment and control measures. In addition, localities that receive information about sick or dead pigs are supported to take samples and send them for testing to determine the exact cause.

On July 13, Mr. Bui Van Khanh, Chairman of Lac Son Commune People's Committee, and the Steering Committee for Disease Prevention and Control directly inspected the disease prevention work in the locality. From July 3 to 13, Lac Son Commune detected 272 pigs infected with African swine fever. The authorities destroyed more than 11,385 kg of sick pigs, ensuring compliance with technical standards and environmental hygiene. Infected pigs often have symptoms such as high fever, loss of appetite, spotting, pale skin, constipation and diarrhea.

Immediately after the outbreak, Lac Son commune authorities deployed 6 quarantine checkpoints, with people on duty 24/7. At the same time, they required livestock farmers to sign a commitment to temporarily stop transporting pigs in and out of the epidemic area; cleaning and disinfection were carried out daily with lime powder and chemicals.

Along with that, the veterinary force has increased field inspections to each household to closely monitor the epidemic situation, promptly detect and handle new outbreaks. The Steering Committee for Disease Prevention and Control of Phu Tho province requested all communes and wards to continue to resolutely implement control measures to quickly control and completely eradicate the epidemic.
