Domestic rice price

Rice prices today, May 13, 2025, recorded mixed fluctuations. While rice and by-product prices increased slightly, paddy prices tended to decrease.

In the Mekong Delta region, raw rice prices at factories tended to increase slightly, especially for varieties such as 50404 and OM 380 due to scarce supply. However, paddy prices adjusted down and transactions were quite slow.

In reality, in localities such as An Giang, Lap Vo (Dong Thap), Sa Dec and An Cu markets (Tien Giang), the amount of rice arriving is at a steady level, the price is stable. Good rice is bought by warehouses to maintain the price, while traders buy slowly and the price fluctuates little.

Specifically, the price of CL 555 raw rice today increased by VND 100/kg, trading at VND 8,600 - 8,900/kg. OM 380 is currently priced at VND 8,000 - 8,100/kg; IR 504 is at VND 8,200 - 8,400/kg; OM 18 fluctuates from VND 10,200 - 10,400/kg; Jasmine rice remains at the highest level, from VND 17,000 - 18,000/kg.

At retail markets, rice prices remained virtually unchanged. Fragrant rice was commonly priced at VND18,000 - 22,000/kg; regular rice at VND15,000 - 16,000/kg; Thai fragrant rice at VND20,000 - 22,000/kg; Huong Lai maintained at VND22,000/kg; while Nang Nhen remained the most expensive rice, at VND28,000/kg.

For sticky rice, the price of IR 4625 sticky rice (fresh) remains at 7,700 - 7,900 VND/kg. 3-month-old dry sticky rice fluctuates around 9,600 - 9,700 VND/kg; IR 4625 sticky rice (dry) is at 7,900 - 8,000 VND/kg.

By-products today showed signs of a slight increase. OM 5451 broken rice was stable at 7,350 - 7,450 VND/kg. Rice husk remained at 1,000 - 1,150 VND/kg. Notably, bran increased by 100 VND, to 7,100 - 7,300 VND/kg, marking the highest level in the past three weeks.

On the other hand, the rice market today recorded slow transactions and low volume. In An Giang, the Summer-Autumn rice harvest was early but the purchase was slow, causing prices to decrease. In Kien Giang, rice prices were relatively stable but transactions were quiet. Dong Thap and Long An were also in a similar situation, with low supply, traders buying sparingly, and rice prices falling slightly.

Specifically, in An Giang, the price of IR 50404 rice decreased by 200 VND, to 5,400 - 5,600 VND/kg; OM 5451 also decreased by 200 VND, to 6,000 - 6,200 VND/kg; OM 380 decreased by 100 VND, currently trading at 5,500 - 5,800 VND/kg. Meanwhile, varieties such as OM 18 (fresh), Dai Thom 8, Nang Hoa 9 remained stable, fluctuating from 6,550 - 7,000 VND/kg.

Export rice price

According to the World Bank's forecast, international rice prices are likely to continue to fall this year due to abundant global supply.

According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the export price of 5% broken rice is currently at $397 per ton. The prices of 25% broken rice and 100% broken rice are traded at $368 and $323 per ton, respectively.

Compared to regional competitors, Thai rice of the same type increased slightly to 410 USD/ton, becoming the highest price in the market at present. Meanwhile, rice prices from India and Pakistan had opposite developments, reaching 381 USD and 389 USD/ton, respectively.

The Philippines remains Vietnam’s largest import market, with purchases reaching 1.12 million tons as of early May. Although the Philippines’ total import volume fell more than 21 percent year-on-year, the country began to recover imports in April.

The World Bank said in its latest report that international rice prices are at their lowest in more than two years, with many varieties falling below $380 per ton. Global rice prices are forecast to fall by up to 29% in 2025 due to strong production growth and India’s easing of export restrictions.

Global rice production is expected to increase by 2% in 2024-25, with India alone seeing a 5% increase. The World Bank predicts that rice prices will stabilize again in 2026, when supply and demand in the market are more balanced.

Vietnam is still a major rice exporter to the Philippines and many other Asian countries. However, the prolonged downward trend in international prices will put pressure on domestic rice prices, thereby directly affecting farmers’ income.

In the context of abundant global supply and fierce competition, the Vietnamese rice industry needs to focus on improving product quality, optimizing production costs and expanding markets to maintain sustainable growth momentum.
