In the Mekong Delta region, durian prices range from 30,000 to 130,000 VND/kg, the region with the highest prices thanks to the diversity of quality durian varieties. Musang King durian grade A leads the way at 125,000 - 130,000 VND/kg, followed by Black Thorn grade A at 120,000 - 125,000 VND/kg and Thai VIP at 90,000 VND/kg. Thai durian grade A leads the region at VND76,000 - VND78,000 per kilogram, while Ri6 grade A reaches VND53,000 - VND55,000 per kilogram. Overall, the durian market on May 16, 2025 continues to be stable, with the Mekong Delta leading in price thanks to premium varieties such as Musang King, Black Thorn and Thai VIP. The Southeast and Central Highlands have lower prices, focusing on popular durian varieties such as Ri6 and Thai, which are suitable for domestic demand. Durian growers should prioritize the development of high-quality varieties such as Musang King and Thai to optimize profits, while closely monitoring export demand to adjust production strategies. Low-priced varieties such as Ri6 type B and Thai type C still have a place in the mass consumption segment, but bring lower profits.

Although durian prices remain stable today, pressure from quality control regulations in Cambodia and China will force Vietnamese businesses and farmers to restructure their production, processing and preservation processes. Banning the use of inedible additives and increasing chemical residue testing requires transparency in the supply chain, from cultivation to export. Experts say the durian industry competes not only on price but also on food safety standards and brand reputation.

With market demand remaining high, especially for premium varieties such as Musang King and Thai, durian growers need to prioritize sustainable farming practices and strictly adhere to chemical regulations. Popular varieties such as Ri6 type B and Thai type C still have a place in the domestic market, but with lower profits. To maintain its export position, Vietnam needs to invest in testing laboratories, issue safety certifications and improve its capacity to monitor growing areas, as recommended by agricultural experts.

According to The Nation, Cambodia’s General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE) has ordered increased inspections and random sampling of durians imported through border gates to detect toxic chemicals, especially illegal ripening agents. The samples will be sent to the Department of Consumer Protection, Competition and Anti-Fraud (CCF) for analysis, and the offending shipment will be immediately confiscated. The move comes amid concerns that durians imported from neighboring countries, including Vietnam, may contain unauthorized chemicals, posing a health risk to consumers.

The tightening of inspections in Cambodia comes as Vietnam is also cracking down on chemical-related violations. On May 9, 2025, authorities in Dak Lak province busted a ring illegally using chemicals to ripen durian, confiscating nearly $4 million worth of chemicals and prosecuting two individuals. This event shows that the pressure to control durian quality is increasing not only in the domestic market but also in export markets such as Cambodia and China, which have tightened chemical residue inspections since the beginning of 2025.
