China expands fruit imports, Vietnam faces fierce competition

The market for durian and other Vietnamese fruits in China is facing increasingly fierce competitive pressure as the country continuously expands trade cooperation with countries such as Cambodia and Thailand.

On June 7, Cambodia and China signed a strategic cooperation agreement under which China will import 20,000 tons of dried mangoes in the 2025-2027 period and 15,000 tons of durians in the 2025-2026 period, according to Khmertimeskh. In 2025, China is expected to receive 3,000 tons of dried mangoes from Cambodia.

In addition to focusing on mangoes, Cambodia is also boosting the export of durian – its main product. At the end of April, the General Administration of Customs of China officially licensed fresh Cambodian durian to be imported into this market, marking an important step for Cambodia to enter China's nearly $7 billion durian market.

Although it has not yet built a strong brand, experts say that Cambodian durian has many competitive advantages such as low production costs and support from Chinese investors, helping to develop growing techniques here and improve product quality.

Along with Cambodia, Thailand – the world’s leading durian exporter – is also implementing many measures to maintain its leading position in the Chinese market. Since the beginning of the year, China has tightened the inspection process for 100% of imported durian shipments for cadmium residue and yellow O. However, the Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives affirmed that they have prepared supplies to meet the increased demand during the season.

In addition, China has also created favorable conditions for Thai durian when the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) allowed customs checkpoints to operate 24/7 and increased the number of laboratories in border areas. This helps shorten the time for quality inspection, especially for the possibility of yellow O residue, thereby promoting exports during the peak season.

From the above moves, it can be seen that China is gradually reducing its dependence on traditional sources such as Vietnam and Thailand, while diversifying its fruit import sources from many different countries to bring a variety of prices and product quality to the domestic market.
